Stats, Groups, Funds and Fun

Some Stats
Checked the blog stats and in addition to US views, we apparently have some members in the Netherlands, Russia, Thailand, Slovenia and Croatia among other countries.  We even had a view from Cote d'Ivoire but apparently nobody from Kenya or Ethiopia hit the site looking for running advice.

Group Run
Weather willing, our group run will be at Sailor's Point in Peace Vally Park (Lake Galena) at 10:00AM on 12/31.  It's the intersection of Myers and New Galena Roads.  Ample parking, port-a-johns and a chance to run across a windy causeway.  Today's reports are that the trails are mostly clear.  One loop is ~6 miles.  Feel free to start earlier if you are ambitious.  Multiple excellent post exercise food choices.  I'll be doing a 7 mile bike loop if you prefer to bike rather than run.  The run may be wet so don't forget dry shoes and socks for apres run.

Fund Raiser
From Randy Opdyke - "Just wanted to make you aware of a charity I am supporting that you or any club members may be interested in. On January 16th I will be running the P.F. Chang's Rock 'n' Roll Marathon in Phoenix, AZ. I will also be raising money for St. Jude Children's Hospital in  Memphis, TN. I'm sure you're aware of St Jude's. Founded by the late entertainer Danny Thomas, since 1962 St.Jude has been the premier organization for research and treatment of children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases. Parents magazine named  St. Jude the No. 1 pediatric care hospital in the country, based on the survey of more than 75 children's hospital nationwide. At St Jude  no child is ever denied treatment because of a families inability to pay. And the daily operating costs are primarily covered by public contributions.  I hope you will consider sponsoring me with a tax deductible contribution. You can contribute online with a credit card at my personal web page, www.mystjudeheroes.com/justrun. You will be able to print a receipt for your records at that time.
Tkank-you in advance for your support. May you have a happy and healthy New Year."

Happy Holiday!, New Years' Eve Run, Log In or Log Out?

Ho, Ho, Ho
All the best for the Holidays to everyone and may Santa bring multiple PRs and a happy and  healthy 2011.

Group Run
Want to get ready for New Year's Eve festivities?  Our next group run will be at Sailor's Point in Peace Vally Park (Lake Galena) at 10:00AM on 12/31.  It's the intersection of Myers and New Galena Roads.  Ample parking, port-a-johns and a chance to run across a windy causeway.  One loop is ~6 miles.  Feel free to start earlier if you are ambitious.  Multiple excellent post exercise food choices.  I'll be doing a 7 mile bike loop if you prefer to bike rather than run.

The Running Log
While we had running logs bad-mouthed of late, here's a contrary opinion from Jim Higgins, "I use the one my son got me for Christmas years ago. Usually, I write one line (date/distance/time) for a run or a race.  I don't obsess over it. It's good data to have in case something is not quite right. For example, my IT band was giving me problems so I had it adjusted in October. One quick perusal of my running log showed that my times were starting to get slower as early as February (not by much at first, then more noticeably as the year went on). Next time, I'll get adjusted much sooner."

Club Races
Our club is off for a month but get in shape for the Chilly Cheeks.  A bear of a trail race even if you dont see any ursine critters on the route.  All four cheeks will get cold.

Group in the Light, Grope in the Dark, Logging Off

Group Run
Saturday 12/18, 10:00 at Pfaff School (1600 Sleepy Hollow Rd., Quakertown 18951).  Who’s in for Lake Galena on 12/31?  Same time (10 AM) followed by a meal.   E-mail me at bill.tuszynski@gmail.com.

Early in the Morning – I Ain’t Got Nothin’ but the Blues
Here’s a link extolling the weight loss benefits of exercising before breakfast.

I have two lessons from the article.  First, while before breakfast may be desirable, before coffee is sacrilege.  Second, my normal midweek breakfast is at 5:30.  Don’t expect to see me outside at 4:30 for a run.

The Running Log
Running diary question - I refuse to keep one because I found myself running for the diary and not for fun.  How do you avoid being a slave to the spreadsheet?  Has anyone else pitched their log books?   I know many (most?) runners keep their diaries as a record for training and races but for me it makes running into work.  My feeling is that I do enough work during the day/week that it should not spill over to running.  Let me know what you think.

From Bob Bodkin:  I stopped around 6 months ago for the same reasons.

Kelly Rickert: Never had one... never will. I run because it is fun. I start dealing in time and how fast and being better than I will quit, too much pressure and I have enough of that in my life... Running is my therapy not my spread sheet :)

Any contrary opinions?

New Member
Welcome to Megan Zakarewicz.

Group Run
It looks like we have a greater consensus for the 12/18, Pfaff elementary option.  We'll meet at 10:00 at the school (1600 Sleepy Hollow Road, Quakertown 18951) at 10AM, do our thing and retire to the Spinnerstown Hotel for our recovery meal. . . and beverages.  I'll have maps and elevation profiles to help you choose your mileage/difficulty mix.  You can also bring your bike as there are excellent bike routes in the area.  E-mail me at bill.tuszynski@gmail.com.

Calendar Update
The calendar of spring races is starting to fill out although some notable favorites such as the Bucks 5K Series and the Kutztown Fool's Run have not yet appeared.  Give me a heads-up for any races that are now listed.

New Members, Getting Together, Gutting it Out, Pics and Results

New Members
Welcome to two new members.  Amanda lemon tells us, "I was at the 5K race for Habitat for Humanity in Quakertown this morning and I would love to join the Bux-Mont Running Club! I have
been running by myself for almost a year and I have completed two 5K races. As much as I love running solo, I think it's time to start running with other people and build up my endurance."  Also welcome Rick Werkheiser who comes to us via the website.

Group Run
We're about due for a group run (important) followed by group food (more important).  There are choices as to date and venue.  Possible dates are Saturday 12/18 or Friday 12/31 (or both if enough are interested).  Venues are (from West to East) Green Lane Trails/Coopersburg Diner; Pfaff elementary (Rotary March race course)/Spinnerstown Hotel and Lake Galena/Roman Delight-Dublin Diner-Luberto's.  Weigh in with your choice and hopefully we can get two groups out.  Either post a comment or e-mail me at bill.tuszynski@gmail.com.

Dedication
Here's an amazing story about the Norther California Girls' XC Championship.  It's about a young runner, Holland Reynolds, who bonked on the course, collapsed just short of the finish line and managed to crawl across to give her team the championship.  There's a link in the article (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/12/02/sports/02runner.html?hpw) to a video of the race showing what happened.  You have to watch about 20 minutes before seeing her come in but it's worth it.

Habitat Pictures
Photos from Saturday's Habitat 5K are up on www.flickr.com. Search for 2010 Quakertown Rotary Habitat 5K.  The results are posted on www.peakrace.com and will be up shortly on www.habitatbucks.org. Thanks to all the Bux-Monters who came out.

Get belled this weekend and next at the Jingle Bell 5Ks.  Hit Bethlehem this week and Malvern next week.

Race Results
A very busy weekend out there.  Kudos to those who braved the snow and slush on Thursday.  Special notice to Colin McLaughlin who ran a great race to take second at the Habitat 5K.  My chip disappeared at Berwick so my result is unofficial.  The chance to shave a few minutes was tempting, but resisted.
