Laurie's Lines

Laurie Reinhart is a regular contributor to the Bux-Mont newsletter.  This article, however, gets it's own spot:

Simple Fuel

There is no shortage of advice about how to fuel your runner’s body. So what poses me to write this article? More information? No, less information.
I need to qualify this by saying that I like things simple and am frustrated by too much information. I run for the sheer enjoyment of running. I love the health benefits and the social aspect of it. And I am a chronic under-trained mid-packer. But I also have been running healthy and strong for more than 10 years. I’ve run 5k’s and I’ve run 100 milers. I am a healthcare professional, and I pursue solid nutrition information. Running has changed my life and I love the opportunity to help other people experience the same reward for their efforts.
So this may be for you and it may not be. But the good news for us simple people is, I have found, that it comes down to just 2 things: Natural Foods and Calorie Count.

Natural Foods.
I had been running several years before I discovered trail running, ultra distances and a network of friends who helped me really challenge myself. As I added intensity, time and distance I was hearing a lot about how I had to fuel, how I had to eat, how many gels I should be taking in, how much sports drinks and electrolytes and salt pills, on top of the snacky candies, chips and soda at aid stations. Being new and scared, I did what they told me and for a couple years and it was ok. I achieved some really cool goals on the apron strings of my best friends. But as someone who cheers on the whole natural food, back to the earth movement, I wasn’t happy with consuming what I call “crap” and “tech food”.
I know that sugar and high fructose corn syrup, chemicals and colorings are bad for you. They challenge your body. So if I’m out in the woods pushing myself to cover 100 miles in 30 hours, without sleep over 14,000 feet of elevation, Why in the world would I also challenge my body to deal with bad “food”?
On a 100k training run this summer, I struggled and was really cranky with nausea and bloating. As I walked and pouted out a few miles, I realized it was happening more often. I realized that feeling lousy was my limiting factor--not fatigue or blisters or desire or cramps, but my belly. On that day, I had been trying to run on few calories, ended-up hungry and woofed down both “crap” and “tech” food about mile 40.

Calories
The other thing about these bad “foods” is that they are full of calories. Depending on your body size and your running course, you burn 100-150 calories per mile. That is not a lot of food. And in most circumstances you don’t need to be replacing those calories while you run. On a short, intense run, your body will burn the sugar in your blood until you finish. A 5k is less than 500 calories. Most of us can’t afford a Gatorade and a Power bar after that. And that gooey stuff in your dry mouth, sticks to your teeth and causes tooth decay.
On an endurance run, a properly trained body will burn fat, and we all have enough fat to run for a very long time. If you flood it with simple sugar calories it will burn-up those calories, with no nutrition to show and your body will look for more sugar. Avoid eating during your long run. Eat well thru the day for the quality, natural building blocks to recover, repair and build your tissues. You can teach your body to burn fat and draw from reserves on your long run, by doing it.
The cool thing about having your body trained to burn fat is that you don’t need to eat and deal with digestion issues on your run and ……. your body burns fat.  Yeah!

The Test
My big race this summer was the Vermont 100 miler and it was 3 weeks away from that belly busting 100k training run. This time I was well trained, ready to taper and make my plan which had to include no belly-aches. I most definitely have enough fat to run for a very long time. But 100 miles is very long and I’d need fuel. And this is my success story of real food and low calories on a long run.
With a race start at 4am, I didn’t make time for breakfast. I choked down a couple pieces of Standard Process protein bar (all natural, not your typical OTC sport bar) and a cup of coffee, took a picture with my crew and seeded myself right in the middle of the pack. It got warm fast and I drank a lot of water from my handheld bottle and refilled it a few times. My first calories came at mile 20 when my crew met me with in ice cold 8 oz bottle of 100% berry juice. I switched my water bottle for one with home-brewed peppermint tea and they pushed me off. I drank my tea and a lot of water until mile 30 when I got an 8 oz carton of cold OJ, a bottle of home-brewed ginger tea and another push off. Eventually I did hit the aid stations for a piece of potato and a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, since I got a hairy eyeball at the weigh-in station for weight loss. I like the SP bars so I started carrying and nibbling them on the trail to maintain my energy and stop weight loss.
While I didn’t quite meet my goal of breaking 24 hours I do know that the natural food and low calories worked for me. It was a really hot day, so while I consumed a lot of water and backed off my pace, 45% of the field dropped out with heat exposure, nausea and muscle cramps. My low calories and natural food saved me from nausea and bloating and I used the peppermint and ginger tea for insurance. The juice gave me fructose for quick energy and electrolytes and minerals to replace all I was sweating out and I had no muscle cramps. The bits of protein bars kept my slow burners going for dependable energy and no bonk. My “weight lose” was simply a result of a heavy weight-in Friday night after I had spent the day hydrating and eating a little more salt than usual. I truly felt strong and healthy from start to finish.

Take Home
While my example may seem a little complicated, most people don’t and I very seldom do run 100 miles on the mountains in high temps. What I hope you’ll see is that in most running situations a well trained body is better off without all junk. Train your body, feed it well and natural and keep it simple.

Welcome to Jean Artim.  From Jean, "I started running last year with the main objective to become healthier.  I have found it to be extremely rewarding both physically and emotionally.   I have participated in several 5ks and have slowly progressed to longer distance races Bow Tree 10k and Stoudts Brewery 12k this past weekend.  I am focusing on increasing my running distance."

Carpools?
Several races with carpool opportunities coming up.  First is the Evansburg trail 10 Miler on 10/31.  The race is at 10:00 so we'll  leave from the Quakertown Park & Ride at 8:30.  The Oley 10M/5K and Bear Creek Trail 10K/5K are both on 11/7.  The Oley carpool needs to leave from the same spot at 7:00.  Bear Creek at 8:30.  Later in November, we have Berwick on 11/25 and the Dirty Bird on 11/28.  Let me know if you're interested in any of these and I'll set things up.  Contact me at bill.tuszynski@gmail.com.  I'm running in all of the above except the 11/7 races.

Chose Your Shoes
Despite the best efforts of Nike, et. al., more expensive isn't necessarily better when it comes to running shoes.  It makes cheapsters like me feel better.
Buying New Running Shoes (or Not)
By TARA PARKER-POPE
Joshua Bright for The New York Times Money often buys higher-quality goods, but not when it comes to running shoes, experts say.

Todays Patient Money column takes a look at the many upgrades shoe makers are adding to athletic shoes.
Shoe manufacturers keep adding bells and whistles to shoes in the form of cushioning gel pods, microprocessors and so-called thrust enhancers, but these upgrades dont seem to make runners safer. A review of current studies on running shoes published in 2009 found that there were no evidence-based studies that show running shoes actually help prevent injury. Indeed, injury rates have not gone down.
Fancy running shoes may even lead to injury, experts say. Some studies show that when runners don expensive running shoes that promise superior cushioning, they incur more injuries than runners using cheaper shoes.

New, Beaned?, Pools and A Reminder. . .

New Member
We've had some interesting stories from our new members, but few as compelling as Sergeant Brian Mcgory's, "I ran my first 5k in the spring of 2005 while deployed to Kuwait and became instantly hooked on races. I ended up running every race they had, including the Peachtree 10k that was run in conjunction with the race here in the U.S. It became my goal to do the Broad Street Run which
I finally completed in 2009 after my second deployment to Iraq, despite never having run more than 7 miles. I made it a point to do a 5k per month after Iraq and earn myself many shirts. Here I am in Afghanistan now and while medical conditions currently prevent me from running how I want and how I know I am capable, I still run 3 times a week on a treadmill and refuse to go less than 4 miles. It is currently my goal to return home in time to run Broad Street again in 2011 and then my first half marathon in Jan 2012 in Disney. While my pace is much slower than it was just a year ago, I am adjusting to being a slower runner and still manage to enjoy racking up the miles.  I enjoy running for the health aspects as well as the proverbial"runner's high" after a good run. I always find it exciting and fun to run in new areas and to do races through scenic locations. Hence the desire to run Disney. "

Also welcome Mary Grucella.  Mary tells us, "I'm very much into 5k runs and try to do at least 2-3 a month."

Boston Registration
Wow!  If you snoozed, you loozed!  Boston closed in 8 hours, a record.  Hard to believe that there are THAT many runners faster than me?  Congratulations if you made it, condolences if you were shut out.  Boston is getting to be almost as popular as Mudfest!

Getting Lucky
Jim Higgins passes along the following from a friend of his.  a reminder that while we are in shape, we are neither bulletproof nor immortal.

"On Tuesday, October 5th, I saw my doctor concerning some chest pain I was having when I exercised.  My chest felt tight above my heart and I had some pain radiating out to my arms.  The pain was not present when I was at rest.  After speaking to a Cardiologist (close friend of my doctor's and a fellow MS-150 rider) I checked myself into St. Mary hospital's emergency room.  He was concerned that I had some classic symptoms and wanted me to have a catheterization.  A neighbor of mine is a nurse at the hospital and came down to the ER when she got a phone call that I was there.  She advised me to have the catheterization performed immediately.  I'm really glad she was there.  I was in the ER by 3:00 and the catheterization was started before 5:00.  I was very lucky.  My Left Arterial Decending  (LAD) was 99% blocked.  The catheterization was successful and it opened up the artery.

Later that night, I was in my room and the nurse was going to pull the catheter sheath from my leg.  When they do that procedure, they have to apply pressure on the femeral artery to keep you from bleeding.  As I learned later, there is a nerve in that area that can make you black out (if you are sensitive to pain).  Guess what, I am.

Unfortunately, not only did I pass out, my heart stopped for 27 seconds (Before you ask, I did not see "the light").  When I woke up I had 8 extra people in my room.  They all had these worried looks on their faces.

Anyway, I am fine.  The only pain I have now is in my leg where the catheter was inserted and my chest where CPR was applied.  I will have to wear a monitor for a few weeks, but I actually feel better than when I went in.  I guess that's the idea."

New Member, Boston, New Race Series, Your first Marathon & Carpools

New Member
Mike Leary joined us a little while ago.  Here is his profile,  "I was a former cross-country runner in high school, and got back to running after a 15 year layoff.  For the past two years I've run about 20 to 30 miles per week and have competed in a few 10 milers and half-marathons (nothing longer yet).  I recently moved with my family (wife and two children) to Bucks County from Cary, NC and I'm looking for a running club in the area."

Boston Registration
If you were quick enough to BQ, you'll have to be equally quick to register for the Boston marathon.  Registration opens at 9AM on Monday 10/18.  You have to register online on the race website, www.baa.org. It sold out last year in about the time it takes for Usain Bolt to do 100 meters downhill with a strong tailwind so don't procrastinate.

Race Series
Heidi Pernia shares this info about a well-hidden and cheap but challenging and fun race series, "Wanted to let folks know I found a neat series of open cross country runs in Fairmont Park in Philly at Belmont Plateau. They have distances from 2K for ages 8 and under all the way up to 5k for high school and open women's and an open men's race of 5 miles. It is very no frill and a cost of $5.00. The course is a combination of loops on the grass and a gravel/dirt trail segment depending on the distance of the race. There are some challenging but not crazy hills and it is very spectator friendly. The schedule can be found at http://www.uagtca.org/Express/Welcome.htm Philadelphia Express is the running club that runs it and you can also google that. There are a lot of teams that run but you can also register as unattached. I think that there is only one more race left but they do have it every year. It is a great way to get young kids involved in cross country and the adults can participate too! Most of the kids races had 30-40 girls and boys.

This past Sat. Oct. 9th Nolan ran the Boys Bantam division (9 and 10 y.o.) and placed first on the boys 3k course in a time of 13:07. (7:02 min/mi).  I ran in the women's open 5k and placed first in 22:30. The next race is Oct. 23rd. If you would like a change from the roads but do not necessarily want to jump into one of Ron Horn's trail runs try this - it was a blast!!"

First Time
Share your first time marathon experiences, even if it was last week at Steamtown.

You can either post your experiences on this blog as comments or send them to me at bill.tuszynski@gmail.com.

Carpools?
Several races with carpool opportunities coming up - Evansburg trail 10 miler on 10/31, Oley 10M/5K and Bear creek Trail 10K/5K, both on 11/7.  Later in November, we have Berwick on 11/25 and the Dirty Bird on 11/28.  Let me know if you're interested in any of these and I'll set things up.  Contact me as above.

Clinical Research
Took this from Ron Horn's PCS e-blast for the two running in the US who don't receive them:

If you suffer mild to moderate knee pain and have had no knee surgery are between the ages 40 and 69 you may be eligible to participate in a research study of a dietary supplement.  QUALIFYING PARTICIPANTS WILL BE COMPENSATED FOR TIME & TRAVEL.  To learn more, please call: 610-779-7061  This study is being conducted in Pennsylvania, in both Reading and Lancaster: as well as in New York City.

The study is being run by Research Across America.  Research Across America is proud to work with many of the major global pharmaceutical in the following areas of research: Allergy/Asthma, Endocrinology, Obesity, Family & Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology, Gynecology, Infectious Disease, Neurology, Nutraceuticals, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, Pain Management, Rx-to-OTC Switch, Smoking Cessation, Urology, Vaccines and others.

MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of Research Across America is to provide thorough and compassionate health care to our patients while exceeding client expectations for patient enrollment and data integrity. For more background, visit their website at www.researchacrossamerica.com.  Nothing on the website combines relieving knee pain with enhancing any body parts, which would raise doubts about their legitimacy.

New Member, First Marathon?, Quick Links

New Member
Welcome to Kristen Munoz who joins us via Bob Bodkin and the Shake, Rattle & Roll 5M where she toasted me.   More from Kristen soon.

First Time
Fall Marathon season (and longer!) is once again upon us.  Any number of us are preparing to run our first marathons while others are approaching 50 (marathons, not age although that is true as well).  It seems an opportune time for the more experienced runners to reflect share the experience of their first time.  I'll kick it off even though my marathon experience is limited.

My first was the 1978 Finger Lakes marathon, a point-to-point from Ithaca to Marathon NY.  The course was rolling with a few good hills as that whole area is hilly but overall  a net downhill.  I was running 50-60 miles/week back then but not marathon trained as I had done very few runs over 15 miles.  The race started on an October day around noon or early afternoon.  There were maybe 50-100 runners entered.  I remember it being sunny and in the 40s.  I also remember rain and snow squalls somewhere around the 20 mile mark.  We had water stops maybe every 5 miles and there was no such thing as gels of energy goop to take along the way.  Your fuel was whatever you ate before the race.  I was one of the last finishers in 4:03, coming in just as dusk was falling.  They had already had the awards and everything was close to breaking up when I finished.  It's hard to imagine anyone putting on such a casual and low-key event these days!

You can either post your experiences on this blog as comments or send them to me at bill.tuszynski@gmail.com.

Yo! Some Philly Help Over Here
Lisa Needham is registered for the Philly marathon but her running buddy Lory Meyers got shut out.  let me know if you or someone you know has a place in Philly but can't run it and I'll hook you up with Lisa and Lory to work out arrangements.

Bad knees?  Blame Mom and Dad
Interesting article about the possible genetic component of ACL injuries, a growing problem for young female athletes.

 http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/09/29/phys-ed-are-bad-knees-in-our-genes/#more-36961

And Proud to be a Clydesdale/Athena
Not me yet, although that is one of my long-term goals.  I personally like the pacer method of x pounds/inch of height to qualify.  Otherwise, Manute Bol and Shawn Bradley would have been Clydesdales.  http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/10/04/weight-classes-aim-to-balance-races/?scp=1&sq=clydesdale&st=cse

Club Races
Dig out your torches, bright ideas, flares, burning bushes and various other forms of illumination for the Ghouls and Fools night trail run.  This is a "race" everyone has to do at least once.  If trail running is laid back, lower key and fun compared to asphalt, then these events are the frat parties of trail running.
