Grouping, Hunter-Gathering, Gettin' Old

Group Run
Last year we had a fine time at a New Year's Eve run.  Let's repeat the event and start a new tradition!  After Peace Valley Park last year, its Upper Bucks.  We'll  meet at Pfaff Elementary (1600 Sleepy Hollow Rd., Quakertown) at 10:30, run or bike a variety of routes and repair to the Spinnerstown Hotel for an early start on ringing in the New Year. Given that the world is ending in 2012, you may as well have a strong finish to 2011.

Going Paleo
Last week's newsletter mentioned the "paleo diet" where you eat meats, vegetables, nuts and seeds while avoiding grain agricultural products.  The idea is to eat like our paleolithic pre-agricultural ancestors.  Kelly Rickert shared the following observations about her experience with getting back to her roots, "Funny you should mention the Paleo diet in your last newsletter.  I find it is more of a lifestyle change than a diet.  For the most part it is a very sound way of eating.  High protein, moderate veggies, lower on the fruits.  It talks about the different types of fats and the ones that are best are high in omega 3 which research has already proved is good for your heart health.  Getting rid of the butter and cooking with things such as olive oil and coconut oil as a substitute.  Nuts such as almonds and seeds such as sunflower, pumpkin seeds etc are good as well.  The best way I can describe it is a cross between the Atkins and gluten free diet.  It is a low glycemic lifestyle which is great for those with diabetes.  No processed, no whites (flour, bread, pasta), and no processed sugars.  Also, no corn, peas, beans as well.  Some people will also say that no cows milk products.  I do more of a modified version of this because it needs to be a sustainable lifestyle for me.  So I have morphed it a little based on the diet as well as my knowledge of diet and nutrition from being a nurse.  I agree with about 90% of what they teach for Paleo.  It is a way of teaching the body not to run on carbs but to use fat stores instead.  Things like sugar and breads and pastas cause spikes in insulin production in the body and can cause those highs and lows in energy levels as well as spikes in blood sugar.  I was introduced to it when I started to crossfit in addition to my running.  I find that I do have more energy during the day and not as many peaks and valleys as I did with the way I was eating before.   I have lost the additional 15 lbs that I needed to and have seen some tremendous drops in my running times with the addition of this diet and the crossfit.  I do a more modified version of this that is sustainable for my lifestyle.  I have taken what I have learned from Paleo as well as my own knowledge of nutrition from being a nurse and combined it.  I would say that I eat Paleo about 80-90% of the time.  Moderation is the best thing you can ever do for your body.  I have a book about it if you want to borrow it.  There is a lot of info out there on the internet as well.   It is a very interesting way of thinking of diet."

Old Farts Update
The good news - we old runners use oxygen as efficiently as our younger peers.  The bad news - we're less flexible and more prone to injury.  And, despite our high efficiency, we still get slower no matter how well we process oxygen.  At least slow and moving beats "sedimentary".  http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/12/21/for-older-runners-good-news-and-bad/?ref=science

Group On, Bad Advice, Packing The Pounds - Not, Follow the GPS

Group Run
Last year we had a fine time at a New Year's Eve run.  Let's repeat the event and start a new tradition!  After peace Valley Park last year, its Upper Bucks.  We'll  meet at Pfaff Elementary (1600 Sleepy Hollow Rd., Quakertown) at 10:30, run of=r bike a variety of routes and repair to the Spinnerstown Hotel for an early start on ringing in the New Year.

Getting It Backwards
Somebody needs to tell our great friends at active.com that they have become thoroughly confused.  This time, they give us an article warning of the dangers of mixing beer into your training regimen.  http://www.active.com/nutrition/Articles/Does-Beer-Affect-Your-Training.htm

Although some eschew beer while marathon training, most runners build their training about the foamy beverage, active's "expert" spends most of his time warning about the dangers of mixing beers with training and, horrors of horrors, racing.  Obviously the man has no clue about PCS and Pacer trail runs.  He also expresses amazement that Hashers actually "map their runs around local bars, using them as aid stations."   Here's someone who has never said "on, on."

Keeping Off The Pounds
Courtesy of Don Kuntzman, here are nine tips to avoid packing on superfluous pounds during the Holidays.  While some try to build the extra R-Value that an extra fat layer gives for winter running, the "bulk" of us are looking to keep their weight under control.  Many of these tips apply to non-athletes as well.  I look forward to hearing from anyone who tries the ice-bath tip because it will be a cold day in Hell before I do!  Note the link to "paleo" dieting -p the concept of eating like the hunter-gatherers we evolved to be before agriculture.  Anyone given paleo a try?  How does it work?

But My GPS Says. . .
Every race director has had a runner come up after a race to complain/observe that the course was 10 meters long or short because their GPS said so.  The fact of the matter is that they are not as accurate as everyone believes.  http://www.nytimes.com/2011/12/20/health/nutrition/gps-watches-may-not-track-runs-accurately.html?ref=health So don't try to figure out why you get wildly different results from similar runs on different days or why the USATF Certified 10K course is 9,987 meters to you.  To quote the Goo Goo Dolls - "if you don't expect too much of me, you might not be let down."

On the other hand (especially if you wear 2 GPS watches) here's a rebuttal extolling the performance of the newer generation of watches: http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2011/12/why-new-york-times-gps-running-article.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+DcRainmaker+%28DC+Rainmaker%29

Go Chris, Filling Up Race Rolls, Out in a Group, Java Run?

Featuring Chris
Congratulations to Chris Garges, featured as a member of Team Rev 3 (http://www.facebook.com/notes/team-rev3-triathlon/2012-returning-team-member-chris-garges/310211345677113)

2012 Returning Team Member: Chris Garges

by Team Rev3 Triathlon on Monday, December 12, 2011 at 3:50pm
Chris Garges: 36 year old father of two amazing children, a Bethlehem PA resident that has a hard time figuring out which direction to put a wetsuit on!  Chris loves to give back to the community through volunteering, philanthropy, directing races and leading pace groups and hopes to obtain a coaching certification in 2012.

Why are you stoked to be on Team Rev3?
Well, honestly I don't know who's more stoked that I'm on Team Rev3 for my third year...myself or my kids!!  They love the getaway trips to Rev3 venues like Quassy, while I'm stoked to be a part of they best thing to hit the sport of triathlon, a company and a team that shares the same values that I do.

Races Filling
Two of the premier local races are the Superbowl 10K and Lehigh Valley Half Marathon.   Both races are so popular that they have field limits.  The Superbowl 10K is now sold out and more than half  of the places in the Half have been taken.  plus there is a price increase at the end of the month.  Get your app in now if you plan on running the Half before all the places are snapped up.

Group Run
Last year we had a fine time at a New Year's Eve run.  Let's repeat the event and start a new tradition!  Time and place to be announced.

Joe Workout
Many of us, myself included, wouldn't think of doing anything, much less going our the door for a run without a morning cup of coffee or two.  It turns out that coffee actually does help your performance in both endurance and anaerobic events.  Those of us who are older really think the effect is getting the workout over so you can empty your bladder.  http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/12/14/how-coffee-can-galvanize-your-workout/?ref=health

New Member, Ave Maria, Go Coach, Cost Effective

New Members
We welcome Beth Howard and Nolan Pernia to our ranks.  Beth is a relatively new runner who joined at the Habitat 5K.  I've been reporting Nolan's times for a while as mom Heidi has been a long time member.  Heidi, who is no slouch herself and a frequent award winner at races, now struggles to stay within shouting distance of her son.

Profiling Mary
Here's a profile of three-time Ironwoman Mary Latza from this week's Morning Call.  Mary's a hard-core triathlete and has a bike that's worth more than my car.    http://www.mcall.com/health/mc-workoutwinner1206-20111206,0,6666171.story

Coaching Long Distances
Let's have a round of applause for Jack Heely and Dana Wentzel for leading Team Philly Challenge to a successful result at the Las Vegas marathon.  Neither ran but was instrumental in the team's performance.  I'd report on results but what happens in Vegas . . .

Racing on a Budget
Looking for some races to fill your winter but don't want to break the bank?  Then either head west for the Shiver by the River 5K/10K series in Reading or south to Tyler Pack for the Bucks County Road Runners' Winter Series.

The Shivers, put on by the Pagoda Pacers, are held monthly every second Sunday from December through March.  you can do all four races for $40 or each individually for $15.  No frill, no shirt but indoor facilities, good grub, a fine group of people and a banquet free for those who do a minimum of three races.

The BCRR series is weekly and more varied with distances ranging from 5K to a half marathon on some difficult and hilly courses in the park.  The facilities are more spartan (read outdoor) but the food is good, the fellowship great and there is a post-series banquet for BCRR members.  You can race a la carte for only $5 per race.

I've done the Shivers a number of times and run a bunch of the BCRR races (put the Terrible Tyler on your bucket list) and can say that every one of them has been memorable, especially those where we ran through snow or frozen half to death.  Both series are fully covered in our race calendar below.

Race Results
Looks like everyone stayed short this week.  Nice job by Chris Garges winning the Lights in the Parkway 5K.  Judging by the times, my guess is that the Souderton Reindeer 5K course was long.  Either that or everyone ran in a time warp where they slowed down to my pace.

Remembering Deena Part 2, Havana Cuba

Remembering Deena
One of Deena's favorite running spots was on the trails of Nolde Forest.  The Run for the Ages she and Ted put on benefited the park.  Because of Deena's love of the location, the family has set up a memorial fund for those who want to remember Deena in this way.  Contributions can be sent to
Friends of Nolde Forest, C/O Deena Andrus, 2910 New Holland Rd., Reading, PA 19607.

Ron and Helene Horn of Pretzel City Sports pledged to match donations made by runners at last Sunday''s Dirty Bird  and raised $1,000 through their generosity and that of the running community.

Havana
Here is an abridged version of Herb Townsend's write-up on the Havana Marathon:  On November 20, 2011, about 2600 athletes from many nations assembled to celebrate the 25th Marabana, a celebration of running with simultaneous races at distances of 5K, 10K, 15K, half marathon, and full marathon. The half marathon drew the most participants, and was won by Richer Perez in 1:04:52, while Milena Perez took womens top spot in 1:28:19. Alexeis Machado took the mens marathon in 2:28;04, and Yadira Gonzales topped the womens field in 3:14:40. All events were chip timed, and complete results for all are given at http://www.inder.cu/marabana/Resultados.html.

The marathon course consists of two loops through the city. The initial 8K proceeds along the Malecon, a well-know esplanade and seawall along Havanas scenic waterfront, and it is flat. From there, it turns up into the city over a series of five rolling hills past many historic and tourist sites Overall, the course was very well manned and marked, and police provided very good traffic control to protect the runners.

Water and sports drinks were provided every 3K in beanbag-like plastic pouches which needed to be torn open with ones teeth. Given doubts about the safety of Havanas tap water, this
seemed like a good solution, at least until the supply of pouches was depleted, thus leaving the slower marathoners without much-needed water.

Another issue was the complete absence of port-a-pots, or equivalent, at the start or anywhere along the route. A few of us were lucky enough to have our guide locate a toilet in a nearby  basketball stadium, but even that could be best described as primitive.

Given the hills, a full sun with temperatures in the upper 70s, and pollution from Havanas antique vehicles, this is not an easy course. Case in point -- although I registered for the full  marathon, the thought of second loop led me to bail out at the halfway mark. Since there is no apparent way to change the registered distance at the race, my advice to future participants is to preregister for one of the shorter events, thus optimizing enjoyment of the other parts of the trip without either pre-marathon anxiety or post-marathon stiffness.

Something that completely caught me off guard is the custom among Cuban runners to expect foreigners to give them their shoes, shirts, and even watches upon finishing the race. Some of the locals were downright aggressive in their quest for my stuff, making me very uncomfortable since I travel very lightly, and was unable to contribute much. This was unfortunate, since there were many shirts and shoes back home that could have been brought had I understood the situation in advance.

For many years, Cuba had been one of my highest priority travel destinations. Learning about a marathon in Havana made it sound even better. Unfortunately, travel to Cuba by US citizens has  been restricted by the US Government. Unless one has relatives in Cuba, it appears there are but three options. One is to charter a fishing boat in Key West. I have heard of people doing this, but besides being illegal, there are other possible dangers in traveling the ocean in a small craft.  Another way is to fly to and from Cuba from someplace like Canada, Mexico, or the Bahamas.  While this also is illegal, few people are caught because passports are not stamped in Cuba. But who wants to break the law and risk some unknown future consequences?

Fortunately, there is now a legal way for average US citizens to travel to Cuba under a program aimed at promoting people-to-people interaction for cultural, religious, and professional exchanges.  Originated during the Clinton years, the program was suspended by the Bush administration. Now restored under Obama, savvy travel agencies are again offering tour packages that include the required licenses from the US government. One agency, Insight Cuba, is the first to put together a tour specifically for runners to travel to the Marabana, and our tour group was probably the first US team to compete in Cuba in the last 50 years.

Our pioneering tour group/team was an interesting and eclectic collection of athletes, extreme adventure seekers, descendants of cuba exiles, writers for running publications, and retired bucket-listers like myself, ranging in ages up to 80. It included people who have traveled widely to place like Antarctica, My Kilimanjaro. Among us was Udon Beidler, an accomplished 64-year-old, who won her age group in the marathon, but was given second place in the male age group owing to an unfortunate name/gender confusion. There was also Carol Montgomery, who at age 76 would have been the second woman overall in the 5K, except for the fact that she didnt see the finish line, and ran an extra 2K before getting back to the finish only to be credited with a last-place age-group finish.
