In Memoriam, Go Bob, Testing 1, 2, 3

Remembering Deena
It's with great sorrow that I have to pass on the news of the untimely death of Deena Andrus at age 47 from an apparent heart attack. Besides being an excellent runner, Deena and her husband Ted were fixtures in the local running scene as both Bux-Mont members and active participants in Reading's Pagoda Pacers club. They were the co-directors of the Run for the Ages 10K age-graded trail chase. More than that, Deena was a genuinely wonderful person who dedicated herself to the running community, she was also a great friend to many and a devoted wife to ted and mother to their young son Mark.  Please keep Ted and Mark in your thoughts as they go through this difficult time.

Super Job Bob
Lots of our members run ultras (races more than marathon distance) ranging from 50K to 100 miles.  Bob Bodkin set himself an interesting and  challenging goal of running 11 ultras in 2011.  With the Stone Mill 50 miler last weekend, Bob made his goal.  In one of the stranger race director moves, Stone Mill wound up being 55 miles, not 50 and the announcement was ,made during the race, not before.  That must have been enormously disheartening to hear in mid-run.  While a foot injury forced Bob to stop at 49, he still made his goal.  So great work.  Hopefully Bob will come to a different goal by 2025.  Bob is signed up for the Vermont 100 miler as a fundraiser for Mike Marsteller's HCN Foundation.  You can donate at
http://www.active.com/donate/hcmteamchallenge/vermont100
Doing the Experiment
Having been trained as a chemist, I'm more prone to believe experimental results over untested theories.  While I've posted links to a number of articles touting minimalist shoes, I've remained skeptical absent an experiential result.  Well, it's time to put the minimal rubber to the road.  I bought a pair of Vibrams but they did not fit right in the arch while wearing socks.  I traded them in for a pair of Altra Instincts, which are also zero-drop (no heel) and very flexible in the forefoot.  I'll be passing on my experiences with this style of shoe and would be interestred to hear your experiences, positive or negative with switching to forefoot running.

A Change of Pace, North by Northwest (From Bucks County), Let Me Be

Something Different
Out in California to work and got the chance to do one of my favorite runs.  There's a nice little nature preserve off one of the estuaries on the East Bay near Oakland Airport and an easy loop from the Holiday Inn right there.  It's under 3 miles but a nice way to start the day.  We were in the Berkshires and then Easthampton, both in Massachusetts, last week  and there were a couple of neat routes there to explore.  Easthampton has a series of paved rail trails running from the town that get a lot of use.  definitely flatter than running in an area of ski resorts.  Are there places you travel to that are particularly nice for running?  Downtown Cleveland is also a good place for a run, although the wind off of Lake Erie can be no fun in the winter.

Berwicking?
Anyone looking to carpool to Berwick?  I won't be running but we may go up with our dog to spectate.  You won't have to share the back seat with her.

Too Much Help
One of the greatest frustrations that new runners have is the bewildering sets of contradictory advice they get from well-meaning vets.  http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/15/health/nutrition/for-beginning-runners-advice-can-be-a-hurdle.html?ref=science  Did you get so many helpful hints that your head was ready to explode and you worried so much about stride, pronation, hydration and the Red Sox nation that you were unable to relax and run?  I was fortunate to start in the 1970s when there were only a handful of running books (none of which I read anyway) and no internet to dispense useful advice and useless rumor in equal measure.  As a result, I just put on sneakers and ran and let my body tell me when to rest and when to push.  I've never had an overuse injury by following that regimen.  .

Another New Member, Pick Your Race, When Going "Short" is Good, Help

New Member
Welcome to Bob Levkulik. Looking forward to his joining us in group events.

Easier to Pick
We've hit the month of the Thanksgiving Holiday, although TV commercials seem to have elided over that holiday directly to Christmas.  Regardless of  which holiday is on your radar, the coming of the cooler weather means that the race calender is finally thinning out and you have fewer than 30 races to choose from on a given weekend.  It's also the coda to the fall marathon season in the Northeast.  Given that our friends at the TV networks have decommissioned Thanksgiving, you're now free to tromp up to Berwick for this year's Run For the Diamonds.  It's a race that should be on everyone's bucket list with a tradition dating back to 1908.  It is run on the original route and you benefit from the fact that the roads are now paved.  The link to the race website is in the listing in the race calendar below.

A Little Warmth
Despite the snow "event", it's been unseasonably warm so far this season.  In fact, the snow was our first frost of the season, about a month behind schedule.  That means that the long pants are still in the back of the drawer (unless you're out in the very early AM).   So far, I've been running and biking in shorts with a goal of making it to Thanksgiving before digging out the leggings.  how about you?  At what temperature do you "go long"?

November Marathons
We had a  fine October of marathons with Chicago, Marine Corps and Steamtown and the introductory Delaware and  Lehigh run among others.  New York is in the books with Richmond, Harrisburg  and, of course, Philly.  Pass along any races you're running so I don't miss you in our results.  It's more imperative for Harrisburg and Philly because I can sort PA finishers in out of state marathons and work with a manageable subset of results to sort.

Club Races
Dodge the golf balls on the Macoby Run Run this weekend.  A great run, well organized and better food.

Welcome to Jackie Dziadosz.  Jackie tells us, "I'm 28 and did running/jumping in HS Track and one year of XC in HS and College. Completed a 1/2 marathon and a marathon. Just casual running now,
doing a 5k here and there. Hoping to join you guys now and then. I need motivation for winter running!!!"

Irene Redux
Hard to believe that we had races go off on Saturday and Sunday although there were a number of reschedules.  some irony in that the south Mountain 10</5K was moved up from the traditional 2nd Sunday in November and is now back on that date.  Most amazing was that the Evansburg Classic Trail 10M, although the water crossings were taken out.  I hope everyone has power back to read this in a timely fashion.  It's difficult to explain to your significant other that it's OK to go out for 8-10 miles even if you can't shower when you get back.

Dedicated, Dim or Degenerate?
Despite the conditions, we had an "interesting" group run on Saturday.  It was me, Keith Little and Michael Womelsdorf.  While Keith and I wimped out at 3, Michael did 8+ and earned his adult beverage at the Spinnerstown Hotel even more than we did.   Hopefully we'll have better weather for our next group event.

November Marathons
We had a  fine October of marathons with Chicago, Marine Corps and Steamtown and the introductory Delaware and  Lehigh run among others.  November  features NY, Richmond, Harrisburg   ans=d of course Philly.  Pass along any races you're running so I don't miss you in our results.

Doing it Bare
Here's an article by Chris McDougal about his journey to barefoot running and some of the techniques to get there.  More importantly, he shares techniques to develop the proper forefoot-strike technique.   The point is that the shoes make running the way we evolved easier but without the technique, they do not provide a significant benefit.  http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/06/magazine/running-christopher-mcdougall.html?pagewanted=1&ref=general&src=me

Website
Visit the club website, www.buxmontrunning.com and check out the "Athlete Profile" page featuring short self-written bios of club members. That I'm on there proves you don't have to be a good athlete to be on the page! Send yours to either me or Tom Daugherty. Tom actually does the work in his function as webmeister.

Race Results
the heroes and heroines this week were all those who got out and competed.  One suspects that getting to and from the races was the hardest part, especially on Saturday.  The Marine Corps marathon does not publish the finishers list and you have to search individual runners.   So let me know if you ran and I missed you.  Congratulations to Heidi Pernia who captured  first woman in the "Hat Trick" Series of the 5 & Dime, Dash & Splash and Octorun.  Well done.
