A Special Race, How Dumb Are We?, Who Are You?

A Special Race
I don't normally promote races but there is a new addition to the calendar on December 30.  It's the Benjamin Wheeler Memorial Fund 5K in Newtown.  Ben was one of the children tragically slain at the Sandy Hook Elementary School .  His mother is a native of Newtown PA.  More on the details of the event are at http://www.phillyburbs.com/mobile_adv/sports#/sports/race-honors-a-favorite-son-of-two-newtowns/article_b4baca9e-aa3e-543c-b380-a5bde4f7208b.html?mode=jqm

Are Runners Smarter?
Here's an article positing that having to organize endurance hunts was one of the factors that drove the evolution of larger brain size in our ancestors.  In support of their hypothesis, the authors bred rats for endurance running.  They also developed signs of increased brain capacity.   Unfortunately, this only shows up in future generations as we don't have Lamarkian evolution where you can acquire a bigger brain by running more.  Sorry.  http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/12/26/exercise-and-the-ever-smarter-human-brain/?hpw

Who Are You?
Are you one of the those runners who hit their mileage goal sometime in November and are taking the rest of the year off.?  Or did you realize on December 15 that you need to get in 450 miles over the last two weeks of the year to hit the number you promised yourself last January?  Or is your goal to have fun and you haven't a clue to the nearest hundred miles as to how much you've run this year?  No matter which category you fit, the important thing is that you're out there doing it.  The only ones who should feel guilty are those home on the couch.

Club Races
The Ugly Mudder has switched spots with the Chilly Cheeks.  That doesn't make either any less challenging so harden up and get out there.

Happy Happy, GOOOAAAAALLL!, Summer or Winter?

Happy Holidays
A belated Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas, Kick-Butt Kwanzaa and Fantastic Festus to all.  May your 2013 be full off new distances conquered, PR's smashed and injuries avoided.

Setting Goals And Tracking Progress
With the start of the new year nigh upon us many of us are planning our race and training schedules.  In fact, most planning to run 2013 marathons have to have had their entries in some months ago to avoid being shut out when the race sells out in a matter of days or hours.  I've traditionally been very loose with running goals and keeping track of progress other than in some vague measure off "Am I in shape and having fun?"  Others on the other hand, are much more quantitative about their goals and tracking how they are doing.  Maybe that's  why I was never at the front of the pack but it insured that running was never like work and that I ran because I had to wanted to and never because I had to.  That's a trade I would take in a heartbeat but others might feel differently.  Share your thoughts on this subject.

Race Season
As judging by the race calendar, the vast majority of runners go from April through October for the bulk of their races, November marathons. excepted,  I've always felt that the more interesting races run from the end of October through the end of March.  I rarely have done any road racing in the summer and limited myself to the occasional trail jaunt in the warmer months.  It's a more interesting experience and you seem to meet more interesting or at least loonier runners in winter than summer.  Again, chime in with your thoughts on the subject.  It's timely as both the Pagoda Pacers' Shiver by the River Series and the BCRR Winter Series kicked off this past weekend and the Act Sports Management "Abominable Slowman" series is new for January/February/march.  Yes the race series takes its inspiration from Quakertown's Joe Brockway.  I hope Joe has a comp entry for the series.

Dzienkuje, The Round Mound of Running, Dress For Success

Thanks to All
A big thank you to everyone who participated in the 2012 Quakertown Rotary Habitat 5K.  We raised over $4,000 to help Habitat Bucks build affordable housing in Bucks County and the 200 of you who signed up despite the blustery conditions went a long way to making that happen.  We'll keep holding this race as long as I cans till fit into my tux.  It's worked for the last 11 years so there's no reason to expect that to change (I hope.)  It was pleasant surprise when Erin Price, Miss Keystone 2012, asked to volunteer for the race.  She helped with registration. served as our official starter and handed out awards.  All without jostling her tiara.

Fat But Fit
I've frequently shared link to studies which show that those who carry weight but exercise generally fare better than those who are slender but sedentary.  The point is that exercise is what does you good and that being active has a bigger impact than does size.  Well, here's an ultra athlete who takes it to extremes.  A 31-year old Dane, Jarmo Pitkanen, is competing in the Manaslu Mountain Trail Race,  a 212km/7 day run across the Himalayan mountains  The run starts in Katmandu in Nepal and finishes in Tibet, crossing a 5,000 meter high pass along the way.  Pitkanen, who has also done multi-day endurance runs in the Arctic and the Sahara, bulks up before the runs on a 5,000 calorie/day dies to a BMI of around 30 to prove that obese athletes can compete at a high level.  I guess that makes him the Charles Barkley of ultra running.  Click here for the full story.  http://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/21/sports/endurance-athlete-takes-obesity-route-for-a-bigger-challenge.html

Getting Ready For Cold
Tuesday's first snowfall of the year was a payback for all of those who complained about heat in July and August.  It's always interesting to see runners at the start of a winter race.  While some are dressed to be comfortable while running, others are dressed as if they were going to be sitting at a football game and being stationary.  The rule of thumb I've always used is to dress for 20F warmer than the temperature at race time.  This way you'll be in balance as you generate heat from running.  You then have about 13 seconds after the finish to throw on some layers before freezing to death but that's the balance.  Now that I'm biking instead of running, it's a more difficult balance.  I hate being overdressed but wind-chill is such a strong factor on the bike, even when you're as slow as I am, that you have to dress for temperatures below ambient.  Then you heat up whenever you stop.  Entirely backwards from running.

Club Races
Keep up with your December training so that you can do all of the late winter races on our schedule.  Plus, you'll still be able to fit in your gear come March.

Getting Back At It

Catching Up
Three days without power and a week in Europe for work with limited internet have conspired to set things back but like a bad penny it's time to get back into the swing of things.  There are fewer race results than anticipated with the cancellations and postponements after Sandy.  I hope that everyone has gotten back their power and suffered minimal home damage.  The running community has come together admirably to contribute to the relief efforts for those severely effected by the storm.

Wasted on Youth
Here's an interesting story of 12 and 10 year old sisters from Texas who compete at a high level in some serious Western trail races.   It looks like they're racing every weekend, maybe twice a weekend, which seems a bit much at that age but they seem to enjoy it and are not subject to overweening parental pressure.  Decide for yourself.

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/04/sports/too-fast-too-soon-young-endurance-runners-draw-cheers-and-concerns.html?pagewanted=all

Canceling New York
Late to the game but glad that the NY Marathon was canceled.  It's too bad that they waited until so many runners came to the city before making the announcement.  I liked Rob Gallagher's point that he now has his first marathon DNF shirt.

Sign-Ups Open
Registration is now open for two of the area's iconic races.  The Superbowl 10K on February 3 allows you to wear the gear of your favorite team in the game, unlikely to be the Eagles this year.  You can get away with wearing your Iggles T. O. jersey if it hasn't been used as a paint rag (or if it has).   Also, don't forget to sing up for the April 28 St. Luke's Half Marathon.  While it's gone through several name changes since the days of the Runners' World Half, it remains one of the premier half marathons on the calendar.  So get yourself on the websites for both and sign up before each race sells out.

Club Races
A  nice double header to work off Thursday's overindulgence.  Warm up with the Habitat 5K before working of about a tom of stuffing and pie at the Dirty Bird 15K trail race.

Race Results
Fewer results than might have been but for any number of race cancelations.  Jack Heely responded to the cancelation of the NY Marathon by going back to back in Richmond  and Norfolk.  The D&L Marathon was the big beneficiary of New York being shut down as they picked up a number of runners from far-flung parts to participate.

Treading Lightly, A Real Dope, Group Event, Making An Impression

Treadmill for Sale
Dawn Lowe is cleaning out things and has a basic treadmill available for sale.  While some of us see these as Satan's handiwork, others prefer to stay indoors for the winter.  Dawn add this info, "I am continuing to clean out closets and other spaces and I  have a basic treadmill for sale in good condition. Asking $300. OBO! It does come apart for easy transport but it is heavy!!! It is set up in the yoga studio for easy viewing or tryouts, but it is taking up valuable space so it must go! : ) " Email me at bill.tuszynski@gmail.com and I'll get you in touch with Dawn.

Pretty Sad
You have to wonder just how screwed up sporting culture has gotten when even someone who is basically a good regional runner winds up doping so he can win a few more $1,000 purses.  A Barry Bonds or Lance Armstrong is almost understandable from the standpoint of highly competitive elite athletes who will do anything for an edge.  It's much harder to make excuses for a cheater at this level.  I'm glad that I don't direct any races with prize money involved.  Maybe I'm just not smart enough or care enough about results to get the why.

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/15/sports/runner-christian-hesch-describes-doping-with-epo.html?pagewanted=all

Group Run/Ride
Our next event will be at Pfaff Elementary (1600 Sleepy Hollow Rd in Spinnerstown) on 11/3.  We'll meet at 10:00, run or ride for about an hour so we can meet back up and slide over to the Spinnerstown Hotel to sample both their menu and taps.  Those who are more ambitious are welcome to show up early to get in extra miles.  The area is pleasantly hilly (how's that for a euphemism?) and you'll earn your Spinnerstown recharge.

An Impressive Runner II
Here's a story about HS junior Sarah Baxter of California who turned in an impressive 16;00 time over what is  called one of the tougher cross-country courses, breaking the previous course record by 16 seconds and winning the race by over 1 minute.  Another example of youth being wasted on the young.

Club Races
Our next adventure is the Macoby Run Run.  Your chance to take a tour around the Macoby Run golf course without a cart while chasing the runner in front of you rather than a little dimpled ball.

Race Results
More race results than you shake a stick at thanks to the RW Festival with 6,000+  participants.  Sorry if I missed anyone as my eyes got pretty bleary going through the results.  Congratulations to Rim-2Rim-2Rim  runners Bob Bodkin and Randy Latza on continuing their bizarre adventures with a 100 mile run and back-to-back marathons.  Congratulations to Autumn Garges for her first 5K at age 11.  Soon she'll be leaving mom and dad in the dust.

Star Crossing, Our Tribe, Help Wanted, A Blast From the Past

Digging the Ditch
Congratulations to Bob Bodkin, Wayne Sigler, Laurie Reinhart, Randy Latza and the rest of the crew who did the R2R2R, running from the south rim of the Grand Canyon to the north rim, with many making the return journey.  Besides the round trip distance of 47 miles, these intrepid runners faced the challenge of the climate change with the change in elevation as they went down, across and up and repeated the process on the return journey.  More on this in two weeks.

Our Tribe
Nice article by Amby Burfoot and George Hirsch about the tribe we belong to as runners and the sub-tribe of marathoners.  The recent news about fake marathons and fake remembrances of times reminds us that those are exceptions and that we depend on our integrity and camaraderie to function as the group we are.

Volunteers Needed for D&L Marathon
Volunteers are needed for the Delaware & Lehigh Heritage Marathon and Half-Marathon on November 4. The races are run on 26 miles of the D&L Trail between Northampton and Lehigh Gap. The event is organized by the Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor.  Volunteers are needed to set up and tear down the start and finish areas, register runners, distribute race packets, staff water stops, serve as course marshals and provide other services. Individuals, families, clubs, school groups, sports teams, and Scouts are welcome to volunteer. Volunteers receive a T-shirt and lunch at the finish area. A volunteer orientation will be held at Lehigh Gap Nature Center, November 3 at 10 a.m.  Volunteer hours vary. The race begins at 8 a.m. at Atlas Park in Northampton; runners must finish their race no later than 2 p.m. Interested persons can volunteer online at http://www.delawareandlehigh.org/marathon/volunteers.php or contact Loretta Susen at loretta@delawareandlehigh.org or 610-923-3548, ex 221. For more information, contact: Dennis Scholl, dennis@delawareandlehigh.org

An Impressive Runner
heres the story of Phil Coppess,  a self-trained marathoner who was also a single parent working full time at shift work in the process.  Despite these obstacles, he set the record in the Twin Cites Marathon in 1985 with a time of 2:10:05.  Amazingly enough, that record still stands. Another reason to not whine about having to work to fit an exercise session into your day.

New Member, 26.2, Great Adventures, Turning 100

New Member
Welcome to Hunter Needham.  Hunter's mom Lisa has been a member for several years.  Hunter tells us, "I was a high school athlete who needed something to do for exercise and competition.  My mom is a runner and she convinced me to join her. So here I am".   Not to mention, he's pretty good, as his Philly Half time attests.

Long Time
With the crisp temperatures comes the start of marathon season.  While we had the early-season Via marathon at the start of the month, October and November are the times for most runs.  The reality, however, is that it's harder to get into a marathon than it is to train.  The combination of the growth of marathoning along with the need for limiting the field size means that you have to register six months in advance or more.  I remember deciding to sign up for the 1978 Finger Lakes marathon about two  months before the run.  I did New York a few weeks later and was appalled by the enormous size of
the field at 10,000+.  Now that's a medium sized half marathon.

Great Adventures

The next few weeks see some interesting adventures on the other side of the Rockies.  This weekend Dana Wenzel is out at Lake Tahoe for the "Tahoe Triple" of three marathons on three consecutive days.  This is Dana's second time accomplishing this feat.

Next weekent a whole crew heads out for an unofficial 47 mile jaunt.  More details after they return.

Hitting The Century Mark
This post marks the 100th such item since Verizon decided that the e-mailed versions were spam.  That these are still beibg read says more about your fortitude than my creativity.
