Don't know if anyone checked out the picture gallery that accompanied the article about Micah True last week. One of the images shoed the minimalist home-made sandal used by the Tarahumara Indians when they run. A telling image was their need to wrap their eet in rags to stanch the bleeding that often occurs on their long-distance runs. It's hard to make a compelling argument for barefoot or minimalist running, at least on trails, based on that picture. http://www.nytimes.com/slideshow/2012/05/21/sports/21true_ss-11.html
Being a Bandit
Here's something of interest originally posted by Jill Forsythe on the www.lvrunningscene.com website about a bandit who was injured in a mud run and is now suing the organizers for $30M. http://www2.timesdispatch.com/news/2012/may/17/tdmet01-unregistered-runner-sues-richmond-mud-run--ar-1920375/ Having been the race director or some 20 events, I'm both bothered that the individual did not swap for the other entrant's bib officially and disgusted that he feels the best solution is to sue. While it is unfortunate that he was seriously injured during the run, it should be obvious to anyone who participates in these events that the risk of injury is not zero and cannot be made so. Should he be successful in his suit, I'll bet that will either be the end of mud runs or entry fees will spike dramatically to cover the increased cost of insurance.
Lake Placid Bound
Maryann Miller is looking to arrange shared travel arrangements to the Ironman Tri in July. she writes, "I am very interested in going to lake Placid to watch or volunteer for the July 22, 2012 Ironman event. This will be my first time, I know it's late notice. Is there anyone going that will let me tag along. ( I will pay for gas, drive, cook, clean, anything etc.) for a ride and share over night space. Reaching Back on Pronation
As reported in Science magazine, Jeremy DeSilva of Boston University presented a paper at the recent meeting of the American Association of Physical Anthropologists. In it, he reported on his study of two partial skeletons of the early hominid Australopithicus sediba showed that the species pronated while walking upright by landing on its narrow heel and shifting its weight to the inside of its sole. While not considered a human ancestor, the results show that bad running form goes way back in our evolutionary history. So the next time somebody tells you that you overpronate, blame Au. sediba for your shortcomings.
Who Is Super?
There was a run on the Guiness book at the Morris Township Half where 1,600 plus runners dressed as superheros to break the record for the most costumed superheros in any event. A somewhat arcane record and there was indication of whether the winner was dressed as The Flash. Many braved the warmer temperatures at the Dirty German and Pocono to go the extra mile, 26.2 or 50. kudos to Carolyn Brzezicki on her first marathon and to Colleen Smith on her first 5K. Reaching Back on Pronation
As reported in Science magazine, Jeremy DeSilva of Boston University presented a paper at the recent meeting of the American Association of Physical Anthropologists. In it, he reported on his study of two partial skeletons of the early hominid Australopithicus sediba showed that the species pronated while walking upright by landing on its narrow heel and shifting its weight to the inside of its sole. While not considered a human ancestor, the results show that bad running form goes way back in our evolutionary history. So the next time somebody tells you that you overpronate, blame Au. sediba for your shortcomings.

There was a run on the Guiness book at the Morris Township Half where 1,600 plus runners dressed as superheros to break the record for the most costumed superheros in any event. A somewhat arcane record and there was indication of whether the winner was dressed as The Flash. Another Shortie With Race Results
Next Group Run
May 19 group run @ the trails at Nockamixon. We'll meet at the Tower Rd. lot on the back side of the lake at 10:00AM, run for an hour and head over to Becker's Corner for a refueling. More ambitious souls are welcome to come and run early. As always, I'll be on 2 wheels for those so inclined. RSVP and feel free to invite other trail dogs.
