New member, BRRR!, Amazing Oscar

New Member
Welcome to Jenn Bishop.  Jenn tells us, "I used to run Cross Country in high school and was very successful. That was back in 1993!! So now after almost 19 years I have started getting back into it. Started last year and ran my first half marathon in October. I am looking for some more people to run with and some different routes around Quakertown and nearby."

Dealing With Cold
Here's what your colleagues say:

Mary Latza - Long tights - thickness depends on the weather, I have some nice fleece lined ones for below 20, gloves, ear cover or hat, moisture wicking base layer (tshirt or tank) and a moisture wicking outer long sleeve layer, and sometimes a wind vest (esp at night because I wear my reflective one.) I don't look like I'm wearing a snowsuit.  Worn that combination down to negative temps and been just fine.   Tried something new today... even though I have kick-a$$ clothing for my arms and legs, sometimes my toes get cold in the winter. Well, I do this cycling and decided to give it a try while running. I took "press-n-seal" wrap, and cut it to fit over the top of my toes, and just placed it on top with a little over the front of my toes. Still plenty of breathability, but my toes were nice and toasty (with normal socks!)

Dawn Lowe - Run with friends to share the pain. Run with my dog to get HIM exercise and therefore ME at the same time. Do shorter workouts, ie. hills and Peake intervals so I don't have to be outside as long!!!! Hot yoga to thaw out and loosen up! : ) Pray for no snow and early spring.

Joan Korth-Bradley - Layers, but always including hat, double mittens and singlet under everything has kept me warm down in negative numbers.

Steve Foster - On the weekend, I run on the trail (the Delaware and Lehigh Trail in the Bethlehem area) and do short distance during the week on the road; definitely wear a balaclava (Ardvark in Bethlehem has a nice one); mittens; and a good quality running jacket that breaks the wind. Open that door!

Bob Bodkin - Bourbon in the Camelback (water freezes).

Springing into Competition
No matter how you feel about whether Cheetah Springs give him an unfair advantage, you have to respect Oscar Pistorius for all he has accomplished  after being born without a fibula in either leg.  http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/22/magazine/oscar-pistorius.html?pagewanted=1&hp

Club Races
Having been tricked into go9ing to the Chilly Cheeks, can you be fooled a second time to enter the Ugly Mudder?  At least it's an easier slog.  When the course isn't buried under a foot of snow and ice.

No Snow :-(, Nice to be Back, Coaches' Corner

Miss the Snow?
We've been lucky so far in avoiding solid precipitation.  (Sorry to be jinxing the rest of the winter.)  While the snow causes a number to retreat to the safety of the dreadmill, a number persist in staying outdoors.  The question is how do you cope with bad conditions.  Leave your solutions/adaptations in the comments section of this blog.

For myself, I limit my routes to those where I can jump off the road in case of an errant car.  I also rotate shoes to make sure that a dry pair is available.  Other than that, it's just like any other running day.

Back Out There
It was great to be out at the Shiver on Sunday, my first race of any kind in 11 months.  Even better than prolonging the 5K experience by going slowly, it was nice to see everyone.  I hope to see more of you throughout the season, both as a participant and as a worker bee.  I'm not working the Bouncing Buns clothing-optional race, showing that I really mean seeing you more often, not literally seeing more of you.

Coaches' Symposium
Last week it was training for race directors.  There is also an upcoming symposium for coaches :

USA Track & Field
Level I Coaching Education School
Presented by Gill Athletics
Date: March 16-18, 2012
Location: Villanova University Villanova PA

School Director: Andrew Allden 919-619-3426 & aacoaching@aol.com
For more information log on to: Coaches Education
The Level I School will follow the Day of Distance Coaching Clinic
March 16 also at Villanova University.

Mud and a Seminar

Get Going
Registration opened on January 1 for the Mt. Penn Mudfest, held every year on Easter Saturday (April 7 this year).   This 15km event is the premier Eastern PA trail race, featuring such lunacies as the in-race egg hunt, the raw egg carry for Godiva chocolate, a marshmallow peep stop (and alternative beverages) plus a traditional pig theme.  The course has the usual rock, roots and hills and features 4 stream crossings, which can be bracing in the early spring.  This is the one trail run you should do if there is only one on your bucket list.  You have to register through www.PretzelCitySports.com and the race usually sells out its 800 spots by sometime in March.

Race Director Training
Want to be a race director?  You've seen me do it which proves it can't be that hard.  But there is training available through a seminar in Ambler on January 14.  According to the organizer, "Our first local Race Directors' Symposium will be held in Ambler on January 14th, and I encourage you to attend the event. A more detailed program can be found here. If you have someone else who will be helping with Souderton Charter School's 5K (or any other race directors) please forward this to them as well - everyone's welcome.  We've watched running grow phenomenally in the area in recent years, and I believe that by exchanging information among ourselves, local race directors will continue to improve the quality, growth, and success of our running events. I'm confident that you'll gain a lot of very valuable information at this unique event -- from experienced speakers, and by sharing information with other race directors!   It's also very likely that this event will lead to a consortium of local race directors, who will exchange and benefit from each others' knowledge and experience on an ongoing basis."

Go to http://www.runtheday.com/Race%20Directors%20Workshop for more information and registration details.
