Taking a Break

It's time to take a break or a while.  While the first interruption was thanks to my getting labeled a spammer by Verizon, this time I'm just burned out and it's getting harder and harder to make the time to collect race results, maintain the calendar and find semi-interesting tidbits.  So I'll say adios for the time being and see if the itch returns somewhere down the road.  In the meantime, happy running and riding and I hope to see you all at races and other events.

Thoughts and Results

Some Observations
I’ve been collecting race results for the BMRC for almost a dozen years.  It used to be that there were no more than 5-10 races in the area on a summer weekend with most being long-standing and well known events that attracted a healthy number of runners.  Now, there are 15-25 races on a weekend during the peak season and any number meet the criterion for the Pretzel City Sports “Easy Award Alert”.  I can’t tell you how many races I’ve seen with 30-50 finishers or fewer and the number keeps growing, especially for 5Ks.  I don’t know for sure what the race scene will look like in 5 years but I’ll bet there will either a large influx of racers of any number of races will drop by the wayside.

Another thing that has changed dramatically over the last several years has been the rise of half-marathons as the new 5K.  In a sense, it’s a return to the ancient times of the first running boom of the 1970s.  Back then most races were “5 & 10s”, that is a 10 miler with a 5 miler for those who preferred a shorter distance.  Today, the half-marathon has replaced the 10 miler as a favorite distance (although probably not for those running 13.1 while in 10 mile shape) and the 5 miler has been supplanted by a 5K.  Besides, the 13.1 car magnet looks better than a 10.0 one.  You could probably find 15-20 half marathons within an hour drive of Upper Bucks over the course of the year,

We’ve also seen the rise of for-profit race organizers taking over some of the marquee events.  Locally, the most notable has been the Rock & Roll group now running the Philly half.  While it’s good to have a committed group in charge, these races are now being run by groups who are not runners and are more interested in the bottom line than the finish line and to whom the runner is the lowest priority.  Fortunately, there are plenty of runner-friendly races that cover the span of distances.

An interesting subset of the for-profit scene is the rise of mud/obstacle races.  The first one I remember was the McGuire mud Run at McGuire AFB but they’ve now become elaborate extravaganzas with $40 spectator fees.  I don’t know about you but I don’t like anyone enough to pay $40 to watch them wallow in mud.
