Gets Served
Two items of note about some young runners. First, 12 year old Colby Wentland became the
youngest finisher of a 100 mile trail ultra at the Ride the Wind 100 in Nevada
on May 18. The results aren’t yet
posted. Very impressive nonetheless.
There’s also 16 year old Alana Hadley of charlotte NC who
is the top distance runner her age in the country. She trains 100+ miles per week with her
father and coach mostly applying the brakes because she’d run more if she
could. Hadley is getting ready for her
first marathon in Cleveland. With a half marathon PR of 1:16:41, she seems
poised for a very successful career.
Alana wound up running 2:58:23, good or 34th
overall and the 6th woman.

Then
Several research articles recently appeared in the
journal Science about the extinct hominid australopithicus
sebida. The reconstruction of
several largely intact skeletons shows that a.
sebida was both bipedal and spent a fair amount of time in trees. Most interestingly, the bones of the foot
show a narrow chimp-like heel rather than the broad flat heel we have. Based on the foot anatomy, it’s likely that a. sebida was a pronator and rolled its
feet in while walking. Hopefully there
were good running stores on the African savannah back in the day so they could
get a proper shoe selection and fit.
Who’s In Charge?
I don’t know how many people have been following the
recent work to characterize the bacteria that live on our skin, inside our
various orifices and, mostly, in out intestines. Bacterial cells outnumber our on by several
orders of magnitude which raises the question as to whether they are cultivating
us as a place to live and are really the ones in charge of the human
species.
At this point in time, nobody knows for sure what
constitutes a health or unhealthy mix of critters in the gut. Unfortunately, this hasn’t prevented a bunch
of snake-oil sales people from promoting “probiotic” remedies of unproven
merit. In fact, when tested the majority
of products on the market did not contain the allegedly beneficial bacteria
they claimed. Proving once again that
“caveat emptor” is even more appropriate in the realm of nutritional mumbo-jumbo.
