Race Calendar Update, Ultra Runners are Different, Coaches' Clinic, Super Bowl 10K

No Surprise Here
Anyone who has ever hung around ultra runners knows that they are a somewhat different breed, both in their willingness to face grueling conditions alone and in their heightened pain tolerance.  The latter can border on disappointment when a race isn't painful enough.  Our friends at Runners' World have summarized some recent research demonstrating this and assessing the psychological profiles of a number of serious ultra runners (not that there are any who are not serious, at least among the living).  The article sums things up with the trail mantra of "If the bone ain't showing, keep on going."  Links to the RW article and two pieces of primary research, including the article cited by RW are below:

SuperBrrr 10K
Kudos to the hardy souls who braved the slush to run the Superbowl 10K last Sunday.  It was great to see 400+ runners enjoying themselves trundling through slop.  This was my third year manning the water stop and I'm always impressed by the effort put out by those in the front, middle and back of the pack.  You all looked great and nobody's shorts made their butt look fat.  Next year we'll have to make margaritas to hand out because the alcohol will keep the water from freezing.   As always, co-directors Chris Garges, Carly Patterson and the rest of the LVRR team put on a great show.

How to Strike, Starting Off, Brrr

Heel or Toe?
After all the buzz about why we should run barefoot or in minimalist shoes, the truth is that the hype is based on some studies of unshod runners that are suggestive but not conclusive.  Research with some different unshod runners show that some are in fact heel strikers.  All came from Kenyan tribes.  The point of the article is that the more we learn the more we understand that we don't know about how to run.  My take is that the right way to run is different for different people and you should just find your happy zone.

http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/01/23/is-there-one-right-way-to-run/

Season Opener
Congratulations to Jack Heely for opening the 2013 marathon season.  Jack ran his 70th at the Charleston Marathon on 1/19.  Harder than the marathon is keeping up your training over the early winter months.

This time of year, you have to head south to find this kid off distance.  Wonder why there are no January marathons in the Great lakes region?

Speaking of Winter
Local runners and riders might have noticed a chill in the Eastern Pennsylvania air over the last 10 days or so.  I noticed the cold when my water bottle froze on my ride on Friday.  Somewhat disconcerting to reach for a drink and get noting because it's solid in the spout.  Based on social media postings it looks like some are bundling up while others are pursuing indoor options.  I just hope that everyone wears an appropriate number of layers.  Remember, you should be cold at the start of your workout because you'll generate enough heat as you go.  Dress for a temperature about 20F warmer than the outside temp and you'll be good.  Because o wind chill, bikers should dress or slightly colder than the real temperature.

Everyone who is praying for heat had better be ready to reap what they've sown in august!

Club Races
I'll mention the Super Bowl 10k but there is no race-day registration.  Keep it open for the Chilly Cheeks moving from January to February.  I'll be volunteering at both races and will look for the regular crew at both.

Ultra Class, Brains Part II, Strides for Hope, Energy Drinks Revealed

How To Ultra
Looking to learn more about trails and ultra running?  Then head over to Fleet Feet Running Store in North Wales on January 16 at 7:00 PM.  Our own Bob Bodkin will be taking part in a panel discussion on this very subject to enlighten and entertain.  The panelist, all experienced ultra runners will describe how to train, fuel and otherwise prepare to go long.  for more information and to register, go to http://www.facebook.com/events/118068268357347/

Are Runners Smarter- II
Here is an article that Herb Townsend wrote for Runner's Gazette confirming that at the very least, running made him smarter.

"About 42 years ago, a third-year engineering student hurried to take a major exam in mechanics with little time to spare.  Mechanics, mind you was a compulsory subject that was intended to try the patience and dedication of would-be engineers, and weed out the unfit.  Just before reaching the test room, he realized he had left his slide rule in his locker which was down several flights of stairs at the far end of the building.

In case you are too young to remember, a slide rule is a 12-in long wooden stick which served as an analog computer for 1960s engineers.  It was the evolutionary link in technology between the abacus and the hand-held electronic calculator.  You could always tell the engineers from the other students by the slide rule hanging from the belt in a scabbard like a Roman soldiers sword.

At any rate, the slide rule was an essential piece of equipment for a mechanics test, so the student ran as hard as possible to the locker and back to retrieve it.  Breathing heavily and sweating, he was able to make it back in time for the test.

When the graded test booklets were returned several days later, the student was astonished to learn that not only did he have the highest grade; his was a perfect score, something almost unheard of in the demanding and competitive environment of those times.  This was his first clue that running did something to help the mental process.

Fast forward 20 years, and the student is now a research engineer for a large corporation.  He takes up running as a recreational pastime, and rediscovers that some of his most difficult problems become much clearer running.  Ironically, bosses fail to appreciate that while he would rather run rather play golf with them, some of his best work and most creative ideas occur while running.  Whereas others like to sleep on it, he learns to run on it before making critical choices.

As you have probably guessed, that student was me, and I definitely think running makes us smarter.  Maybe its the endorphins, or simply more blood and oxygen being transported to the brain.  But by whatever means, Im convinced that something happens to boost thought processes while running.  Granted, the effect is only temporary within an hour or so after cooling down, I am back to my usual dull-witted self.  Moreover, there are definitely limits for example, when hitting the wall about 20 miles into a marathon, I can barely think about anything except finishing, let alone calculate the remaining splits.

All of this makes you wonder, has anyone ever conducted an experiment to compare runners IQ scores in the running and still conditions?  If the results were to turn out the way I expect, would it be possible to compel our corporate and government leaders to run while making important decisions?"

Strides For Hope
Strides for Hope is an organization dedicated to supporting families afflicted by cancer.  As part of their fund-raising efforts they are sponsoring teams in the St. Luke's Half Marathon and 5K and providing training support.  Here are the details:

Looking for a running partner or a reason to run? Join the Cancer Support Communitys charity team, Strides for Hope.
Train with professional coaches every Saturday morning starting January 26 for 12 weeks.  Help us raise money so we can offer programs for people and families affected by cancerat no cost to them.
For info: www.cancersupportglv.org; 610-861-7555 or info@cancersupportglv.org   Were another critical part of cancer care. You can be, too

No Surprise On Energy Drinks
Ever tempted to down one of the multiple energy drinks on the market before a race to give yourself a boost?  Well, no surprise that the evidence shows that you'd do just as well stopping at Starbuck's (or WaWa if you're old school) to get a cup of coffee because the caffeine in the coffee is as effective a stimulant as the energy drink.  http://www.nytimes.com/2013/01/02/health/scant-proof-is-found-to-back-up-claims-by-energy-drinks.html

A Special Race, How Dumb Are We?, Who Are You?

A Special Race
I don't normally promote races but there is a new addition to the calendar on December 30.  It's the Benjamin Wheeler Memorial Fund 5K in Newtown.  Ben was one of the children tragically slain at the Sandy Hook Elementary School .  His mother is a native of Newtown PA.  More on the details of the event are at http://www.phillyburbs.com/mobile_adv/sports#/sports/race-honors-a-favorite-son-of-two-newtowns/article_b4baca9e-aa3e-543c-b380-a5bde4f7208b.html?mode=jqm

Are Runners Smarter?
Here's an article positing that having to organize endurance hunts was one of the factors that drove the evolution of larger brain size in our ancestors.  In support of their hypothesis, the authors bred rats for endurance running.  They also developed signs of increased brain capacity.   Unfortunately, this only shows up in future generations as we don't have Lamarkian evolution where you can acquire a bigger brain by running more.  Sorry.  http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/12/26/exercise-and-the-ever-smarter-human-brain/?hpw

Who Are You?
Are you one of the those runners who hit their mileage goal sometime in November and are taking the rest of the year off.?  Or did you realize on December 15 that you need to get in 450 miles over the last two weeks of the year to hit the number you promised yourself last January?  Or is your goal to have fun and you haven't a clue to the nearest hundred miles as to how much you've run this year?  No matter which category you fit, the important thing is that you're out there doing it.  The only ones who should feel guilty are those home on the couch.

Happy Happy, GOOOAAAAALLL!, Summer or Winter?

Happy Holidays
A belated Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas, Kick-Butt Kwanzaa and Fantastic Festus to all.  May your 2013 be full off new distances conquered, PR's smashed and injuries avoided.

Setting Goals And Tracking Progress
With the start of the new year nigh upon us many of us are planning our race and training schedules.  In fact, most planning to run 2013 marathons have to have had their entries in some months ago to avoid being shut out when the race sells out in a matter of days or hours.  I've traditionally been very loose with running goals and keeping track of progress other than in some vague measure off "Am I in shape and having fun?"  Others on the other hand, are much more quantitative about their goals and tracking how they are doing.  Maybe that's  why I was never at the front of the pack but it insured that running was never like work and that I ran because I had to wanted to and never because I had to.  That's a trade I would take in a heartbeat but others might feel differently.  Share your thoughts on this subject.

Race Season
As judging by the race calendar, the vast majority of runners go from April through October for the bulk of their races, November marathons. excepted,  I've always felt that the more interesting races run from the end of October through the end of March.  I rarely have done any road racing in the summer and limited myself to the occasional trail jaunt in the warmer months.  It's a more interesting experience and you seem to meet more interesting or at least loonier runners in winter than summer.  Again, chime in with your thoughts on the subject.  It's timely as both the Pagoda Pacers' Shiver by the River Series and the BCRR Winter Series kicked off this past weekend and the Act Sports Management "Abominable Slowman" series is new for January/February/march.  Yes the race series takes its inspiration from Quakertown's Joe Brockway.  I hope Joe has a comp entry for the series.

Dzienkuje, The Round Mound of Running, Dress For Success

Thanks to All
A big thank you to everyone who participated in the 2012 Quakertown Rotary Habitat 5K.  We raised over $4,000 to help Habitat Bucks build affordable housing in Bucks County and the 200 of you who signed up despite the blustery conditions went a long way to making that happen.  We'll keep holding this race as long as I cans till fit into my tux.  It's worked for the last 11 years so there's no reason to expect that to change (I hope.)  It was pleasant surprise when Erin Price, Miss Keystone 2012, asked to volunteer for the race.  She helped with registration. served as our official starter and handed out awards.  All without jostling her tiara.

Fat But Fit
I've frequently shared link to studies which show that those who carry weight but exercise generally fare better than those who are slender but sedentary.  The point is that exercise is what does you good and that being active has a bigger impact than does size.  Well, here's an ultra athlete who takes it to extremes.  A 31-year old Dane, Jarmo Pitkanen, is competing in the Manaslu Mountain Trail Race,  a 212km/7 day run across the Himalayan mountains  The run starts in Katmandu in Nepal and finishes in Tibet, crossing a 5,000 meter high pass along the way.  Pitkanen, who has also done multi-day endurance runs in the Arctic and the Sahara, bulks up before the runs on a 5,000 calorie/day dies to a BMI of around 30 to prove that obese athletes can compete at a high level.  I guess that makes him the Charles Barkley of ultra running.  Click here for the full story.  http://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/21/sports/endurance-athlete-takes-obesity-route-for-a-bigger-challenge.html

Getting Ready For Cold
Tuesday's first snowfall of the year was a payback for all of those who complained about heat in July and August.  It's always interesting to see runners at the start of a winter race.  While some are dressed to be comfortable while running, others are dressed as if they were going to be sitting at a football game and being stationary.  The rule of thumb I've always used is to dress for 20F warmer than the temperature at race time.  This way you'll be in balance as you generate heat from running.  You then have about 13 seconds after the finish to throw on some layers before freezing to death but that's the balance.  Now that I'm biking instead of running, it's a more difficult balance.  I hate being overdressed but wind-chill is such a strong factor on the bike, even when you're as slow as I am, that you have to dress for temperatures below ambient.  Then you heat up whenever you stop.  Entirely backwards from running.

Club Races
Keep up with your December training so that you can do all of the late winter races on our schedule.  Plus, you'll still be able to fit in your gear come March.
