Drink. . .
No, it's not Octoberfest. Or a Pretzel City Sports trail race. And no, the preferred beverage should not have a foamy head. What you need to be drinking is water or a sports drink if you plan to be exercising outside during this week of a few days of high heat. It's our first reminder of the year of what real summer is like. Try to get your wrk in either early in the morning or later in the day when it isn't so hot.
Trail Runners vs. Road Runners
Thanks to Lori Johnson for pointing out a great article in Trail Running magazine comparing trail runners and road runners. Here's the link: http://trailrunnermag.com/component/content/article/379-trail-runners-vs-road-runners my favorite is the first one where road racers show up in high tech coordinated outfits while trail races are often assumed to be homeless. Of course, I've looked semi-homeless in my Spuddy Buddy shirt at more than one road race. In the end, the article points out that both road and trail runners are two sides of the same running community coin. Personally, I think that every runner should have the experience of both kinds of races, especially in our area where we have a multitude of both road and trail races of every shape. size and degree of difficulty. It works both ways as I've heard at least one ultra runner express amazement as to how much he enjoyed a road 5K
A Question
Along with our marathon maniacs in the group, we have a number of ultra runners amongst us. The question is how do you train to run 50+ miles and how does it differ from marathon training? Do you train differently for races up to 100K than for races up to 100 miles? Leave your answers in the comment section.

A busy weekend for the group with a variety of distances, formats and clothing options, two on the trails and one on the road. Fortunately, the road race is not clothing optional! Do make sure to head off to the Deena Andrus Memorial run on Sunday as it honors a fine runner and better person gone too soon,.
