Remembering Grete Waitz

Two Big Runs
It's a prime weekend coming up with the LV Half and Broad Street.  It would be a great help if you could let me know which you are running so I don't miss your results.  It's easy to miss someone while spinning through 20K+ results.

Broad Street Benefit
From Carl Ewald, one of the organizers of the ODDyssey Half Marathon: "I have some exciting news, Triumph Brewery is now the official Beer Sponsor of the ODDyssey and they are putting together a great package for the runners.  As you may know, in 2007, researchers at Granada University in Spain, headed by medical professor Manuel Garzon, found that the sugars, salts, and bubbles in beer cause a pint of beer post-workout to be better at rehydrating the human body than water. So, we are partnering with Triumph to develop the first ever official post race beer.  So, because of our great devotion to science and health, we decided to create this great beer to celebrate with.    Obviously the point is that every runner over the age of 21 can receive a free beer at the end of the ODDyssey Half Marathon to toast their triumph!    

But, we are also having a big party to release the beer right after the Broad Street Run.  So, I wanted to invite you and your runners to the official release party for the ODDyssey Half Marathon Recovery Ale.  The party is on May 1, 2011 from 11:30-4:00 at Triumph in Old City.  117 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, PA, 19107.  Hey, where else can you drink to your health all in the name of science?   Any runners who RSVP for the party through the Facebook page will be eligible for one free beer on May 1 after Broad Street as well. The Best Two Wheels You'll Ever Win, Boston Explained and a Milestone

A Sweet Ride For A Great Cause

Boston Explained
When is the fastest marathon ever run not a world record?  When is happens on a course that is not eligible to host a world record.  Why not Boston?  Because the finish is too far away from the start and it's not flat enough.  The first is meant to avoid a course that is a straight line with a tailwind.  the second limits world records to courses that drop a net of less than 1m/km.  I'm not sure that those who struggled up Heartbreak Hill would be very sympathetic to the argument that Boston is too downhill.  the net-net is that Geoffrey Mutai will have to be satisfied with running 2:03:02 on a course that rates as too easy.

A Boston Milestone
Congratulations to Kent Prizer who hit a milestone by making Boston his 100th marathon.  Making Boston his 100th means that Kent has been very good for a  very long time.  Let's hope Kent keeps plugging through his second century.

Beantown, A Bad Combination, Group Report

Yo Beanies!
Good luck to our Boston-Bound crew.  Hope you get off to a better start than the Red Sox.  I'm actually up in New England this week but my only marathons are marathon customer visits.  While the usual suspects are well know, please let me know if you are a first-timer so your results get reported.  You can also follow everyone on-line in real time on 4/18 via the Boston Marathon website, allowing you to at least run vicariously if you have to be at work.

Don't Double Up
While active people have  lower heart attack risk, if they have one it will most likely be after strenuous exertion such as exercise or nookie.  http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/04/06/the-truth-about-sex-and-exercise/ Given the risks, it's better to wait a while after one to start the other.  Plus your partner will prefer it if you take time to shower in between.

Group Run
We had a nice group run on Saturday with lots of mud, standing water and small streams on the Blue Trail at Green lane reservoir.  The omelets were tasty and the company good.  So make sure you don't miss out on our next group run, coming soon to a road, park or trail near you.  Any suggestions for our next venue and time?

Club Races
Jeremy and Michelle Garges lead the SASH 5K in pancake-flat Lenape Park on Saturday.  It's a PR course and off the roads, a double benefit.  Later in the week, the ever-popular Third Thirsty Thursday combines running and adult beverages, a Pretzel City trademark.

Go Jill, Group Mud, More Half-Marathon Kvetching, Keeping Kids Healthy

Way To Go Jill!
Congratulations to Jill Forsythe and her Lehigh Valley Running Scene blog which not only won the best Health and Fitness blog in the recent Morning Call on-line poll but also was voted best blog overall.  Between the blog, the website and her Facebook postings, it's a wonder how Jill found the time last year to qualify for Boston.  She's also one of the key organizers of this summer's Quadzilla 15K trail race as new trail races hit the Lehigh Valley

Group Run?
Saturday April 9, 10AM at the trailhead off Knight Road.  Take 663 west of East Greenville, turn south on Knight and the trail parking lot is a short way down the road at the intersection of Knight and Ward Roads.  Thanks to the recent rains, it will be muddy so bring extra shoes and socks for when we eat.  The post-run food is the reason we go.

One Of These Things Is Not Like The Others . . .
My rant about the $85 early-bird fee for the Philly Half Marathon last week seems to have touched a sore point with many runners - overpriced races.  Here are some regional half marathons with their early-bird fees for comparison.  The hard reality is that they sell out every year so have no incentive to care lower fees or about the runners since, when some stop coming, others are more than willing to take their places.  At least for now.  We all know that the surest path to oblivion is to take your customers for granted
