Dzienkuje, The Round Mound of Running, Dress For Success

Thanks to All
A big thank you to everyone who participated in the 2012 Quakertown Rotary Habitat 5K.  We raised over $4,000 to help Habitat Bucks build affordable housing in Bucks County and the 200 of you who signed up despite the blustery conditions went a long way to making that happen.  We'll keep holding this race as long as I cans till fit into my tux.  It's worked for the last 11 years so there's no reason to expect that to change (I hope.)  It was pleasant surprise when Erin Price, Miss Keystone 2012, asked to volunteer for the race.  She helped with registration. served as our official starter and handed out awards.  All without jostling her tiara.

Fat But Fit
I've frequently shared link to studies which show that those who carry weight but exercise generally fare better than those who are slender but sedentary.  The point is that exercise is what does you good and that being active has a bigger impact than does size.  Well, here's an ultra athlete who takes it to extremes.  A 31-year old Dane, Jarmo Pitkanen, is competing in the Manaslu Mountain Trail Race,  a 212km/7 day run across the Himalayan mountains  The run starts in Katmandu in Nepal and finishes in Tibet, crossing a 5,000 meter high pass along the way.  Pitkanen, who has also done multi-day endurance runs in the Arctic and the Sahara, bulks up before the runs on a 5,000 calorie/day dies to a BMI of around 30 to prove that obese athletes can compete at a high level.  I guess that makes him the Charles Barkley of ultra running.  Click here for the full story.  http://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/21/sports/endurance-athlete-takes-obesity-route-for-a-bigger-challenge.html

Getting Ready For Cold
Tuesday's first snowfall of the year was a payback for all of those who complained about heat in July and August.  It's always interesting to see runners at the start of a winter race.  While some are dressed to be comfortable while running, others are dressed as if they were going to be sitting at a football game and being stationary.  The rule of thumb I've always used is to dress for 20F warmer than the temperature at race time.  This way you'll be in balance as you generate heat from running.  You then have about 13 seconds after the finish to throw on some layers before freezing to death but that's the balance.  Now that I'm biking instead of running, it's a more difficult balance.  I hate being overdressed but wind-chill is such a strong factor on the bike, even when you're as slow as I am, that you have to dress for temperatures below ambient.  Then you heat up whenever you stop.  Entirely backwards from running.

Club Races
Keep up with your December training so that you can do all of the late winter races on our schedule.  Plus, you'll still be able to fit in your gear come March.

Getting Back At It

Catching Up
Three days without power and a week in Europe for work with limited internet have conspired to set things back but like a bad penny it's time to get back into the swing of things.  There are fewer race results than anticipated with the cancellations and postponements after Sandy.  I hope that everyone has gotten back their power and suffered minimal home damage.  The running community has come together admirably to contribute to the relief efforts for those severely effected by the storm.

Wasted on Youth
Here's an interesting story of 12 and 10 year old sisters from Texas who compete at a high level in some serious Western trail races.   It looks like they're racing every weekend, maybe twice a weekend, which seems a bit much at that age but they seem to enjoy it and are not subject to overweening parental pressure.  Decide for yourself.

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/04/sports/too-fast-too-soon-young-endurance-runners-draw-cheers-and-concerns.html?pagewanted=all

Canceling New York
Late to the game but glad that the NY Marathon was canceled.  It's too bad that they waited until so many runners came to the city before making the announcement.  I liked Rob Gallagher's point that he now has his first marathon DNF shirt.

Sign-Ups Open
Registration is now open for two of the area's iconic races.  The Superbowl 10K on February 3 allows you to wear the gear of your favorite team in the game, unlikely to be the Eagles this year.  You can get away with wearing your Iggles T. O. jersey if it hasn't been used as a paint rag (or if it has).   Also, don't forget to sing up for the April 28 St. Luke's Half Marathon.  While it's gone through several name changes since the days of the Runners' World Half, it remains one of the premier half marathons on the calendar.  So get yourself on the websites for both and sign up before each race sells out.

Club Races
A  nice double header to work off Thursday's overindulgence.  Warm up with the Habitat 5K before working of about a tom of stuffing and pie at the Dirty Bird 15K trail race.

Race Results
Fewer results than might have been but for any number of race cancelations.  Jack Heely responded to the cancelation of the NY Marathon by going back to back in Richmond  and Norfolk.  The D&L Marathon was the big beneficiary of New York being shut down as they picked up a number of runners from far-flung parts to participate.
