Dzienkuje, The Round Mound of Running, Dress For Success

Thanks to All
A big thank you to everyone who participated in the 2012 Quakertown Rotary Habitat 5K.  We raised over $4,000 to help Habitat Bucks build affordable housing in Bucks County and the 200 of you who signed up despite the blustery conditions went a long way to making that happen.  We'll keep holding this race as long as I cans till fit into my tux.  It's worked for the last 11 years so there's no reason to expect that to change (I hope.)  It was pleasant surprise when Erin Price, Miss Keystone 2012, asked to volunteer for the race.  She helped with registration. served as our official starter and handed out awards.  All without jostling her tiara.

Fat But Fit
I've frequently shared link to studies which show that those who carry weight but exercise generally fare better than those who are slender but sedentary.  The point is that exercise is what does you good and that being active has a bigger impact than does size.  Well, here's an ultra athlete who takes it to extremes.  A 31-year old Dane, Jarmo Pitkanen, is competing in the Manaslu Mountain Trail Race,  a 212km/7 day run across the Himalayan mountains  The run starts in Katmandu in Nepal and finishes in Tibet, crossing a 5,000 meter high pass along the way.  Pitkanen, who has also done multi-day endurance runs in the Arctic and the Sahara, bulks up before the runs on a 5,000 calorie/day dies to a BMI of around 30 to prove that obese athletes can compete at a high level.  I guess that makes him the Charles Barkley of ultra running.  Click here for the full story.  http://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/21/sports/endurance-athlete-takes-obesity-route-for-a-bigger-challenge.html

Getting Ready For Cold
Tuesday's first snowfall of the year was a payback for all of those who complained about heat in July and August.  It's always interesting to see runners at the start of a winter race.  While some are dressed to be comfortable while running, others are dressed as if they were going to be sitting at a football game and being stationary.  The rule of thumb I've always used is to dress for 20F warmer than the temperature at race time.  This way you'll be in balance as you generate heat from running.  You then have about 13 seconds after the finish to throw on some layers before freezing to death but that's the balance.  Now that I'm biking instead of running, it's a more difficult balance.  I hate being overdressed but wind-chill is such a strong factor on the bike, even when you're as slow as I am, that you have to dress for temperatures below ambient.  Then you heat up whenever you stop.  Entirely backwards from running.

Club Races
Keep up with your December training so that you can do all of the late winter races on our schedule.  Plus, you'll still be able to fit in your gear come March.
