Toughest Races
Here are some comments, from the same facebook group, about remembering their toughest races. This discussion is in honor of those who slogged through Boston last week.
Becky Bodkin - I don't race very often and for that matter have only been running a few years. On my first half marathon at the Philly Rock n Roll I was amazed at the over flowing ambulances near the end of the race due to the heat and over exertion. I trained often in the heat of the day and was thankful I pulled through my first "long" race without passing out! It was a blast and will remember that day always.
Jill Forsythe - Don't discount yourself as a runner simply b/c you don't have as many years invested as some others. You run. End of story. I have had the most grueling training runs, forget about races. Some days are good, others - not so good. I think you rock BB! You too, Bill. :) (Thanks for the props!)
Rob Gallagher - River to Sea Relay 2007. Went down with heat exhaustion in 98 degree weather eight miles into a leg called 'The Beast'. Took an ambulance ride. Suffered short term memory loss, whole nine yards. Insisted my team go on without me, and with my car. Proved I have a great spouse. She put the kids in the car, came and got me out of a NJ hospital.
Me -
Mine
was the 1979 NY Marathon when I dehydrated at the 24 mile mark, sat down and
couldn't get up. I ran a dumb race on a relatively hot 80 degree day after
training in the 40s and 50s. Ran too hard for the not enough I was drinking.

Hola senores y senoras! Time to get ready for the Dos de Mayo, followed quickly by two very fine 5Ks on the real Conco de Mayo. Both the Survive the 5K and the Palisades 5K have challenging hills in the last mile. I've done both and built what little character I have on those courses.

Once again va bunch of races, including a number on a rainy Sunday. A shout out to the Hyner 50K people who packed 8,800 feet of elevation change in 31 miles. Works out to an average 5% grade, up and down, over the full course. Not to mention a couple of half marathons and the second installment of the Bucks 5K Series in New Hope. Is it me, or are there nearly as many half marathons as 5Ks anymore.
