Great Job All
Gotta say that I was exhausted from following the exploits of our endurance athletes this past weekend. Dana Wentzel kicked it off with a 50K at Great Cranberry Isle in Maine while Jen Hooper wrapped it up with a sub 13 hour Ironman Lake Placid. In between, Bob Bodkin, ably supported by the "Bodkinettes", spent 25 hours of Saturday and Sunday doing the Vermont 100 miler. Congratulations to all or some very fine accomplishments. It's nice to cross them off the bucket list without actually having to kick said bucket as a result.
Great Job All Part II
As with any group, our club features a wide range of abilities, from race winners at a variety of distances, repeat Boston qualifiers and elite triathletes to back-packers like me. I learned a long time ago that someone has to be in back at every race, Olympic marathons included. There's no shame in being last. What is always true is that the last place finisher in any race beats all of the couch-potatoes who didn't try.
An Oldie But Goodie
We have some newer runners among us who may need help interpreting the descriptions used by race directors. Here are some examples of phrases commonly used and what they really mean. It's been a while since these were posted and they are as true today as they were several years ago
Flat and Fast - No killer hills.
Fast - If you're a Kenyan.
Rustic - Watch out for horse poo.
Rolling Hills - Do the Canadian Rockies roll?
Up and Down - Where's the down?
Challenging - Oh my God!
Technical - I'll need pitons and an oxygen mask.
