New Members and New Stuff, Saving Carbon

New Members
Welcome to David Dammer.  David tells us, "I'm 41, and I love to run - most of the time.  Beginning to love swimming and developing a mild like for cycling.  I ran from 8th-grade through high school (the skinny years) in upstate NY, picked it back up for a bit between college semesters, then was dormant until 2003, when personal pride dictated that I get off the couch and do something again.  A New Year's Day 5K in chilly Burlington, VT sparked a serious interest again, and I went on to run 6 marathons from '04 to '08, followed by injuries and life in general getting in the way.  This year, got the triathlon bug and completed 4 sprint tri's in the Richmond, VA area.  Just now moving from VA to the Quakertown area with my wife and 3 kids and looking forward to re-starting my relationship with running"

Also welcome Karen Kling. "I'm looking forward to participating in some group runs.  Here is a little about me as a runner.  I discovered the joy of running a few years ago and ran a few 5K races and a half marathon.  I'm trying to get back to running after taking an extended break after having a second child.  I'm hoping that joining a group of people who also enjoy running will motivate me to keep with it."

Getting Cheeky?
Anyone interested in carpooling to the Chilly Cheeks?  Quakertown T-Pike Park & Ride leaving at 9:15.  I'll be a worker bee that day and heading over earlier.  A nice group is expected.

Cause or Effect?
Here's an article suggesting that exercise contributes to a greater consumption of alcohol.  http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/01/05/does-exercising-make-you-drink-more-alcohol/ This should not come as a surprise to the devotees of Pretzel City Sports events.

Older & Faster
Want to know what happens when ladies hit 63?  http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/06/sports/06master.html?ref=sports At least if you are an elite athlete.like Phillipa Raescher.

Harbinger of Spring?
After getting all four of your cheeks chilled in reading, peek below and note the appearance of the season's first triathlons and similar multisport events (duathlons, aquabike).

Fund Raiser
From Randy Opdyke - "Just wanted to make you aware of a charity I am supporting that you or any club members may be interested in. On January 16th I will be running the P.F. Chang's Rock 'n' Roll Marathon in Phoenix, AZ. I will also be raising money for St. Jude Children's Hospital in  Memphis, TN. I'm sure you're aware of St Jude's. Founded by the late entertainer Danny Thomas, since 1962 St.Jude has been the premier organization for research and treatment of children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases. Parents magazine named  St. Jude the No. 1 pediatric care hospital in the country, based on the survey of more than 75 children's hospital nationwide. At St Jude  no child is ever denied treatment because of a families inability to pay. And the daily operating costs are primarily covered by public contributions.  I hope you will consider sponsoring me with a tax deductible contribution. You can contribute online with a credit card at my personal web page, www.mystjudeheroes.com/justrun. You will be able to print a receipt for your records at that time.
Tkank-you in advance for your support. May you have a happy and healthy New Year."

Race Results
Nice when New Years' is on a weekend so we get a clean start to 2011.  Past years have seen year-end summaries but the combination of missing results when verizon shut things down and my laziness prevent a repeat performance.
