A Mini-Milestone
After flirting with 500 page views the last few months, we hit 518 for the month of May with over 100 from outside the US and Canada. Who knows, maybe the next Kenyan phemon is getting tips from the site. Actually, most of the overseas visitors are from the Netherlands, the Ukraine, Russia, Iran and New Jersey.
Well Said
I've tried to articulate the difference between trail running and road running on several occasions but never as well as this, taken from the race organizer's description of the Mt. Cuckoo 15K mixed trail and road race taking place in Denver PA on 8/20. You might have guessed that this is an Uber Endurance Sports event.
"Ever since I started running I noticed quite some differences between roadrunners and trail runners. Roadrunners seem to be skinnier, always wear a GPS watch, and usually run only road races that are downhill with tailwind to ensure another 1.3 sec PR. They eat a lot of carrot sticks to keep their weight down and have a close relationship to their shrink and yoga instructor. Trail runners seem to be extremely laid back. They only run hard if they expect a shortage of beer at the end of a run. After a run they look like a toddler who played in the sandbox on a rainy day. They usually have a close relationship to the local brew master or at the very least one of their friends is a home brewer. These two types of runners always look at each other rather suspiciously, they rarely mix, but both think their way of running is "the" way. " Details on the race at www.uberendurancesports.com.
Next Group Run?
Moving things around, how about Peace Valley Park for our next group fling? We've always had good turnouts there and there is a nice selection of nearby eateries. July 2 seems like an open date in the race calendar or we could skip the holiday weekend and wait for 7/9. What think all?
National Trail Day
June 4 is National trail Day. That's also the date of the Wissahickon Trail Classic 10K off Forbidden Drive in Fairmont Park. It's an accessible and not too challenging race and a good introduction to trail running if you're ready to jump in. It's also worth noting that our area is one of the trail-running hotbeds. Besides the Reading area events we get from Pretzel City Sports and the Pagoda Pacers, and the Trimax events, the Uber Endurance folks have developed a whole series in the Philly area. Meanwhile the indefatigable Jill Forsythe has given us the Quadzilla 15K and there's even a new 8K at Camp Men-O-Lan in Quakertown in late October.
The New 5K?
Along with trail races, there seems to be a proliferation of half-marathons as the new "hot" distance. It used to be that the only local major road ones were Lehigh Valley and the PDR. Now you can do one most every weekend and they're evenly split between road and trail. When I started running back in the dark ages of the 1970s, your choices were 5 miles, 10 miles and the occasional marathon. it only goes to show just how much our sport has grown over the last 30-40 years.

Test your downhill speed at Perkasie's blazing fast Main Street Mile and go multi-sport the next day at the Average Joe/Jane Tri. Both races are very convenient for our Upper Bucks athletes.
