Little Feet, Date & Venue Choices, Long Time on Their Feet, Staying Wet Inside

More Minimalism
A major point of  barefoot running or minimalist shoes is that the change forces you to run on your toes rather than with a heel strike.  It's that change in gait that is claimed to be what makes you more efficient and reduces the risk of repetitive use injury.  Here are some results showing that not everyone who changes footwear learns to change how they run and those who still land on their heels experience heightened impact force.  the recommendation is to make the change in footwear slowly, gradually increasing the share of your runs in minimalist shoes until you are comfortable in your new stride.  http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/09/30/are-barefoot-shoes-really-better/?src=me&ref=health

Group Run - My Bad
After looking at the race calendar, I didn't look at MY calendar.  How about substituting 10/29 for the 22nd?  Jim Higgins suggests the Delaware canal either in Yardley or New Hope.  The latter is probably more convenient for most of our members.   We have other venue options including Tom Daugherty's church on Green Top Rd.  with indoor toilets between Quakertown and Perkasieand a picnic lunch or the Rotary Run course from Pfaff elementary in Spinnerstown followed by the Spinnerstown Inn.  We can do multiple options for different groups.

Relaying Good Thoughts
Good luck to the Lehigh Valley Running Scene team in the Ragnar Relay.  Two days of hard running, friendship and shared gamey smells.  Meanwhile, Laurie Reinhart and her NASCAR-inspired support team head off to the Oil City 100 miler.  Rumor has it that her crew can fill her with Gatorade and change her shoes in 11.3 seconds when she hits the aid station.  This is the start of marathon season and many will be venturing outside the area to participate in the 26.2 mile extravaganzas.  I'd appreciate alerts as to who is running various events just to be able to keep track of everyone and not miss any results.

Drinking and Running
Since many are running marathons this fall, many for the first time, it would be good again to revisit the current thinking about hydration.  interestingly, when I started running in the 1970s, the idea was to drink when you were thirsty.  Then it was "stay ahead of your thirst".  Now, in part due to runners dying of excess fluids, the thinking has come full circle.  http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/10/05/how-much-to-drink-during-a-marathon/?ref=health  Not sure whether that means platform shoes, quiana shirts and Gloria Gaynor 78s will be coming back as well.  My personal take is to hydrate before a race and not take water during if it is 10 miles or less (or a trail run with an alternate beverage stop).  Even in longer races I tend to take water sparingly and more to slow down and take a break than to drink.  What is your experience on hydration?

Club Races
The darkness beckons for the Ghouls & Fools.  Find an oil lamp or tallow candle to go retro.  Just don't set the woods on fire except with your blazing speed.

Visit the club website, www.buxmontrunning.com and check out the "Athlete Profile" page featuring short self-written bios of club members. That I'm on there proves you don't have to be a good athlete to be on the page! Send yours to either me or Tom Daugherty. Tom actually does the work in his function as webmeister.
