New Member, Speeding, Group Event?, 300's a crowd, Help Wanted

New Member
Welcome to Deb Weidman.  deb tells us, "I am an ex smoker turned runner:)  I ran my first 5k in 2008 and since then have run a bunch of races, including some triathlons. This summer I completed a half ironman & just did the Philly Rock n Roll half marathon. I work as a teaching assistant for the Souderton Area School District. I enjoy being outside & spending time with friends, family, & my boyfriend, Mark."

Ach Du Lieber!
Was that a jet that went by or was it Patrick Makau on his way to a world record for the marathon.  While his time of 2:03:38 in the Kartoffelpuffer-flat Berlin course counts as the world record, it's only the second fastest to Moses Mosop's 2:03:06 on the too-easy? Boston course.  Any takers on the over-under for the year of the first sub-2 hour marathon?

Group Run
The cooler weather increases our group run options.  There are no open weekends in October.  Somewhat arbitrarily, let's go for 10/22 as the date.  This way you can get some miles in during the morning and follow up by hitting the Ghouls & Fools that evening to get your full dose of racing as well.

A Crowded Calendar
In the 8-9 years of doing this newsletter, I've never seen the proliferation of fall races that we've had for September-November of this year.   At some point, we'll run short of runners to have all these races survive.  Either that or they have tons of sponsorship money, making the race a good fund raiser even if there are fewer than 50 participants.

Volunteers Needed
This very late from Erica Anderson (erica@ragnarrelay.com ), Events Coordinator for the upcoming Ragnar Relay.  Our club does not have a treasury.  anyone who volunteers can donate the $100 to their favorite charity ot to Back on My Feet, the organization supported by this race.

"My name is Erica and I work for Ragnar Events in Utah. I am coming out to Pennsylvania to work a race that we are holding from October 7-8 from Lancaster to Mt. Pocono. Seeing as your group is composed of people passionate about running, I thought you might be able to help me out with some volunteers for this race. Here is a bit more information for you that I am hoping you will take just a moment to read through. This opportunity will be a lot of fun and is a great opportunity to raise some funds for your running club!

Ragnar Events organizes long distance, over-night running adventures that take teams of 12 runners on an unforgettable journey through some of the most scenic landscapes in the country. In the span of 2 days, teams of families, friends and businesses associates strengthen relationships, build camaraderie, and compete in a 180-200 mile relay race. The Ragnar Relay Series began in 2004 when 22 teams came together to run 180 miles through the Wasatch Mountains of Northern Utah. Seven years later the series has grown to 14 races across the country, making the Ragnar Relay series the largest long distance running relay series in the world. For more info check us out at www.ragnarrelay.com.

This particular event begins in Lancaster, PA and ends at Mt. Pocono. I am overseeing a Major Exchange in Leesport and am in need of some volunteers. Duties and responsibilities vary and may include but are not limited to: crowd control, time recording, set-up, clean-up, directing runners on course, handing out water hot cocoa and coffee, etc. Certain duties may involve heavy lifting but will be noted on the volunteer shift. Volunteer shifts are typically 4-6 hours in length. As the manager for this exchange I can promise that we will have a lot of fun, as these races always bring great energy! For each volunteer that you provide, Ragnar will pay $100 to your organization. As you can see this is a great fundraising opportunity for school athletic teams, PTA boards, etc.

Currently I need 6 volunteers from 4:00pm 10:00pm on Friday, October 7 at 3196 Bernville Road, Leesport, PA. I also need 8 volunteers from 9:30pm on October 7 - 3:30am on October 8 at the same location. There are a variety of other shifts and times available if some of your members are closer to other areas along the route, just give me a call at your earliest convenience. I apologize for the late notice but do hope we can find a way to collaborate! Please let me know by tomorrow morning if this is feasible. "

A bunch of half-meisters, including a gaggle of Gargeses (Gargi?), an AG place by Nancy Smith, PR by Dana Wentzel and a first half for Kelly Rickert.   Plus, Dean Dimmig sneaks off to Ohio and our dovish friends ran around Lake Galena.  Fortunately, none of our distaff runners set a putative world record, only to be smacked down by the IAAF.
