A Change of Pace, North by Northwest (From Bucks County), Let Me Be

Something Different
Out in California to work and got the chance to do one of my favorite runs.  There's a nice little nature preserve off one of the estuaries on the East Bay near Oakland Airport and an easy loop from the Holiday Inn right there.  It's under 3 miles but a nice way to start the day.  We were in the Berkshires and then Easthampton, both in Massachusetts, last week  and there were a couple of neat routes there to explore.  Easthampton has a series of paved rail trails running from the town that get a lot of use.  definitely flatter than running in an area of ski resorts.  Are there places you travel to that are particularly nice for running?  Downtown Cleveland is also a good place for a run, although the wind off of Lake Erie can be no fun in the winter.

Berwicking?
Anyone looking to carpool to Berwick?  I won't be running but we may go up with our dog to spectate.  You won't have to share the back seat with her.

Too Much Help
One of the greatest frustrations that new runners have is the bewildering sets of contradictory advice they get from well-meaning vets.  http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/15/health/nutrition/for-beginning-runners-advice-can-be-a-hurdle.html?ref=science  Did you get so many helpful hints that your head was ready to explode and you worried so much about stride, pronation, hydration and the Red Sox nation that you were unable to relax and run?  I was fortunate to start in the 1970s when there were only a handful of running books (none of which I read anyway) and no internet to dispense useful advice and useless rumor in equal measure.  As a result, I just put on sneakers and ran and let my body tell me when to rest and when to push.  I've never had an overuse injury by following that regimen.  .

Club Races
Double your fun with the 10th Habitat 5K and see if the race director (me) still fits in his tux, then schlep over to French Creek for the somewhat more difficult Dirty Bird trail race.

Website
Visit the club website, www.buxmontrunning.com and check out the "Athlete Profile" page featuring short self-written bios of club members. That I'm on there proves you don't have to be a good athlete to be on the page! Send yours to either me or Tom Daugherty. Tom actually does the work in his function as webmeister.

Race Results
Kudos to Nolan Pernia for the 1:14 at South Mountain at age 11.  He should get the wishbone from the Thanksgiving turkey he won for taking his age group.  and to Debi Golbreski for cracking the 4 hour mark.
