Girls on the Run, Your Comments, Another LV Half!

Girls on the Run
Heidi Pernia is passing this on about a new Girls on the Run group forming in Quakertown. GOTR woks with young girls to introduce them to running and help them train for a 5K. As Heidi explains, "I have a favor to ask. Dr. Kathy Winters who is the principal at Quakertown Elementary school is preparing to start a Girls on the Run program there in March. They are going to be training for a 5k that is May 31st. I would like to try and help by getting shoe donations for the girls. We are looking for people who have used running shoes that still have some "life" left in them. Most of the girls will probably not have appropriate footwear. I was wondering if club members would donate used shoes. I would probably have to arrange to pick the shoes up from people. I have not figured out how else to get them."  Get a hold of Heidi directly or contact me if you can help

Member Input: Who is signed up for a spring marathon (or longer)? How different are the training challenges than for a fall marathon?
What fellow Bux-Mont runners are saying.

Chris Garges - Fall ones are tougher to train for due to the heat we experience in this region in the summer while you're training.

Carolyn Brzezicki - Run for the Red in May! I have no prior experience, but it sure is dark out there in the mornings! I am on the treadmill a lot because of that. I'm hoping that compared to a fall marathon, the long runs - which I do outside - will be gettiing warmer and not colder as the training moves along.

Laurie Rush Reinhart - I am signed up for a marathon and "longer" in spring. Winter training doesn't happen for me. So a spring race goes pretty much like this "close your eyes, cross your fingers and GO!...... and go..... and go.... and gooooo."   Verses summer training. :-) That involves hot sweaty runs. As many as I can find time for. Extreme lawn care and cold beer. :-) Is it summer yet?

Kevin Quinn Honestly, I like training in the cold SO much more than the heat. I like late fall marathons because I have a good shot at the low 40s for temps. Spring marathons could end up with rain/humidity.

Debi Golbreski I'm kind of with Laurie on this one - I put together a training plan but haven't followed it for a "longer" so here's hoping the cross training in the gym and pool do the trick :)

Bob Bodkin I do most my training in the Winter months after a break around the holidays. Once I start hitting my long races, each race sort of becomes my training run for the next long run, with short recovery runs in between events. I find Winter training is easier to schedule because of less family activities. Once spring hits, I have to work it in between my children's activities and social events.

Winter running is not too bad. Once I get moving the cold is not much of an issue. The biggest challenge is lack of daylight. I try to run later to avoid traffic. Although it hasn't been an issue this year, finding room to run safely is a problem when the side of the road is a big pile of plowed snow. I try to hit the trails as often as I can, but avoid them if snowy or icy unless I am running with another person (if I slip on ice and get hurt, I have little chance of someone coming along and finding me). The trails I run have a good amount of people during the warmer months, so it is of less concern then.

Steve Steklenski Bottom line - I admire spring marathoners because you need to long run thru cold winter days ( or nights). Summer's definitely hotter but easier for fair weather outdoor runners like myself.

Another LV Half
For anyone who has been under a rack the last two days, Runners' World has announced a new half-marathon for the Lehigh Valley.  It will take place on Sunday Oct. 21 at Steelstacks in Bethlehem, cross the river on the Fahey bridge and wind around historic Bethlehem to the finish back on South Side.  It will be a hilly but not insane course.  The half will cap a weekend running festival with a 10K and a 5K fun run.  The Lehigh Valley now has a plethora of half marathons, starting with the St. Luke's Half (the original Runners' World Half) in April, the Via Half (and marathon) in September and the Lehigh & Delaware Canal Half in November.
