Book Report, The Hardest Part of Boston, A Blunted Lance

Book Review
This from Herb Townsend about a book by Carol Montgomery:  "Just thought you might be interested in learning that Carol has just published her new book entitled, Tapping the Fountain of Youth, Profiles of Women Runners Over 50."  It describes 28 women athletes, ranging in age from 50 to over 80. Each woman tells her story in her own words beginning with early life and family, to getting started in running, with training methods, diet, dealing with injuries, accomplishments, and future goals.

Some of the women profiled in this book are downright amazing. For example, Lois Ann Gilmore, discovered running in her 60s after recovering from breast cancer, survived a stroke in her 70s, and now sets age-group records in her 80s. All of the stories are inspiring.   Women of all ages and abilities will find this book fascinating. All will identify with, learn from, and be inspired, by the accomplishments of these athletes. Kathrine Switzer, well-known as the first woman to officially compete in the Boston Marathon, notes in her foreward, All female road racers should read this book at sometime in their running lives, because guess what? Ready or not, were all going to get older.

Carol has done an amazing job of documenting how many women have found not only the benefits of running on their fitness, appearance, and outlook on life, but the way in which these benefits continue with age. Truly a fountain of youth!   The book is now available on Amazon.com

Beantown
Boston Marathon registration opened this week for runners who had at least a 10 minute cushion against their qualifying time.  This will stay open until the 15th.  If the race is not sold out, registration reopens on the 21st through the 24th, will applicants accepted based on the fastest in their age/gender group.  If slots still remain, a final round of registration opens on the 24th for those mortals who have merely beaten their qualifying time.  One wonders if marathoning, especially in big name ones, has gotten so out of control that it's more effort to register than it is to train for and run the race.

Lanceless
It looks like anyone looking for Lance Armstrong in your local marathon will be sorely disappointed.  thanks to his investigation by the US ADA, he's banned from participating in any sanctioned events like the USATF.  Maybe we can get him to come to a local 5K.  The interesting thing I saw was that every second place finisher in the TDFs won by Armstrong has been either implicated or nailed for doping or admitted doping on the pro circuit.  Which mean that a doping cyclist will get Lance's TDF titles if he gets stripped by the doping authorities.  I've always said there are two kinds of cyclists - those who are clean and those on the podium.

Club Races
A trail double header, one significantly less painful than the other followed by one of my favorite trail runs in Birdsboro on the 9th.  Finishing the Hit the Hay with a stream crossing so that you're cleaned up at the end is a nice touch.
