Anyone who has ever hung around ultra runners knows that they are a somewhat different breed, both in their willingness to face grueling conditions alone and in their heightened pain tolerance. The latter can border on disappointment when a race isn't painful enough. Our friends at Runners' World have summarized some recent research demonstrating this and assessing the psychological profiles of a number of serious ultra runners (not that there are any who are not serious, at least among the living). The article sums things up with the trail mantra of "If the bone ain't showing, keep on going." SuperBrrr 10K
Kudos to the hardy souls who braved the slush to run the Superbowl 10K last Sunday. It was great to see 400+ runners enjoying themselves trundling through slop. This was my third year manning the water stop and I'm always impressed by the effort put out by those in the front, middle and back of the pack. You all looked great and nobody's shorts made their butt look fat. Next year we'll have to make margaritas to hand out because the alcohol will keep the water from freezing. As always, co-directors Chris Garges, Carly Patterson and the rest of the LVRR team put on a great show.
