A Change of Pace, North by Northwest (From Bucks County), Let Me Be

Something Different
Out in California to work and got the chance to do one of my favorite runs.  There's a nice little nature preserve off one of the estuaries on the East Bay near Oakland Airport and an easy loop from the Holiday Inn right there.  It's under 3 miles but a nice way to start the day.  We were in the Berkshires and then Easthampton, both in Massachusetts, last week  and there were a couple of neat routes there to explore.  Easthampton has a series of paved rail trails running from the town that get a lot of use.  definitely flatter than running in an area of ski resorts.  Are there places you travel to that are particularly nice for running?  Downtown Cleveland is also a good place for a run, although the wind off of Lake Erie can be no fun in the winter.

Berwicking?
Anyone looking to carpool to Berwick?  I won't be running but we may go up with our dog to spectate.  You won't have to share the back seat with her.

Too Much Help
One of the greatest frustrations that new runners have is the bewildering sets of contradictory advice they get from well-meaning vets.  http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/15/health/nutrition/for-beginning-runners-advice-can-be-a-hurdle.html?ref=science  Did you get so many helpful hints that your head was ready to explode and you worried so much about stride, pronation, hydration and the Red Sox nation that you were unable to relax and run?  I was fortunate to start in the 1970s when there were only a handful of running books (none of which I read anyway) and no internet to dispense useful advice and useless rumor in equal measure.  As a result, I just put on sneakers and ran and let my body tell me when to rest and when to push.  I've never had an overuse injury by following that regimen.  .

Another New Member, Pick Your Race, When Going "Short" is Good, Help

New Member
Welcome to Bob Levkulik. Looking forward to his joining us in group events.

Easier to Pick
We've hit the month of the Thanksgiving Holiday, although TV commercials seem to have elided over that holiday directly to Christmas.  Regardless of  which holiday is on your radar, the coming of the cooler weather means that the race calender is finally thinning out and you have fewer than 30 races to choose from on a given weekend.  It's also the coda to the fall marathon season in the Northeast.  Given that our friends at the TV networks have decommissioned Thanksgiving, you're now free to tromp up to Berwick for this year's Run For the Diamonds.  It's a race that should be on everyone's bucket list with a tradition dating back to 1908.  It is run on the original route and you benefit from the fact that the roads are now paved.  The link to the race website is in the listing in the race calendar below.

A Little Warmth
Despite the snow "event", it's been unseasonably warm so far this season.  In fact, the snow was our first frost of the season, about a month behind schedule.  That means that the long pants are still in the back of the drawer (unless you're out in the very early AM).   So far, I've been running and biking in shorts with a goal of making it to Thanksgiving before digging out the leggings.  how about you?  At what temperature do you "go long"?

November Marathons
We had a  fine October of marathons with Chicago, Marine Corps and Steamtown and the introductory Delaware and  Lehigh run among others.  New York is in the books with Richmond, Harrisburg  and, of course, Philly.  Pass along any races you're running so I don't miss you in our results.  It's more imperative for Harrisburg and Philly because I can sort PA finishers in out of state marathons and work with a manageable subset of results to sort.

Club Races
Dodge the golf balls on the Macoby Run Run this weekend.  A great run, well organized and better food.

Welcome to Jackie Dziadosz.  Jackie tells us, "I'm 28 and did running/jumping in HS Track and one year of XC in HS and College. Completed a 1/2 marathon and a marathon. Just casual running now,
doing a 5k here and there. Hoping to join you guys now and then. I need motivation for winter running!!!"

Irene Redux
Hard to believe that we had races go off on Saturday and Sunday although there were a number of reschedules.  some irony in that the south Mountain 10</5K was moved up from the traditional 2nd Sunday in November and is now back on that date.  Most amazing was that the Evansburg Classic Trail 10M, although the water crossings were taken out.  I hope everyone has power back to read this in a timely fashion.  It's difficult to explain to your significant other that it's OK to go out for 8-10 miles even if you can't shower when you get back.

Dedicated, Dim or Degenerate?
Despite the conditions, we had an "interesting" group run on Saturday.  It was me, Keith Little and Michael Womelsdorf.  While Keith and I wimped out at 3, Michael did 8+ and earned his adult beverage at the Spinnerstown Hotel even more than we did.   Hopefully we'll have better weather for our next group event.

November Marathons
We had a  fine October of marathons with Chicago, Marine Corps and Steamtown and the introductory Delaware and  Lehigh run among others.  November  features NY, Richmond, Harrisburg   ans=d of course Philly.  Pass along any races you're running so I don't miss you in our results.

Doing it Bare
Here's an article by Chris McDougal about his journey to barefoot running and some of the techniques to get there.  More importantly, he shares techniques to develop the proper forefoot-strike technique.   The point is that the shoes make running the way we evolved easier but without the technique, they do not provide a significant benefit.  http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/06/magazine/running-christopher-mcdougall.html?pagewanted=1&ref=general&src=me

Race Results
the heroes and heroines this week were all those who got out and competed.  One suspects that getting to and from the races was the hardest part, especially on Saturday.  The Marine Corps marathon does not publish the finishers list and you have to search individual runners.   So let me know if you ran and I missed you.  Congratulations to Heidi Pernia who captured  first woman in the "Hat Trick" Series of the 5 & Dime, Dash & Splash and Octorun.  Well done.

Group-On, Want to Direct?, Autodidact Runner

Finalized Group Run
Let's go for 10/29 at Pfaff Elementary (1600 Sleepy Hollow Road, Quakertown) followed by the Spinnerstown Hotel.  I'll have road maps and people can do all or part of the Rotary 10 mile or 4 mile course.  You're allowed to skip the worst hills without being labeled a weenie.  We'll meet at 10:00, noting that Spinnerstown doesn't open until 11:30.  RSVP to me at bill.tuszynski@gmail.com.

Race Director's Clinic
Ever signed up for a race organized by people who have never seen a race, let alone run in one?  Want to put on  a race and want to get a tutorial on how-to?  Well, our friends at the Ambler Area RC and Run the day are putting on a timely clinic.  Here's some background.  Sorry about no shirt.

Would YOU like to...
  • be a part of a LOCAL learning experience for race directors that is interactive AND inexpensive?
  • efficiently prioritize the myriad of details that go into organizing a race?
  • network with other race directors to share information or resources, ask and answer each other's questions, and brainstorm new ideas?
  • hear from experts about best practices that will make your job easier?
  • learn how to promote your event more successfully, and increase attendance?
Run the Day, Ambler Area Running Club and other local partners are interested in facilitating a network for race directors in Southeastern PA. Our kickoff event will begin a dialogue within the community, and include local speakers who will lead and facilitate workshops on the key aspects of race directing, including:

* Timing, Registration & Results        * Race promotion & Marketing    * Sponsorships & Fundraising
* Logistics & Amenities (including certification, shirts, porta-potties, food, water, goodie bags, permits, signage, ...)

Date: Saturday, January 14, 8:00 am - 12:30 pm
Locaton: Ambler Theater
Cost: By November 18: 1st person: $30; others $20; After November 18 : 1st person: $50; others $40
Registration: http://rdsepworkshop.eventbrite.com/ter/517
Shirt: No shirt! This isn't a run, you know!

Self-Trained or Not?
Jim Higgins, our version of Ryan Hall, weighs in on doing it yourself.  "My vote is self-train. I'm guessing it comes down to a runner's personality. Since I'm very independent-minded, I looked up training plans when I decided to pursue running, and tweaked them as I best saw fit. I didn't see the need nor did I want anyone else's opinion on the matter. Like a lot of things in life, it boils down to my decision on how to go about it.  Thus, I self-train."  It would be interesting to hear what the coaches in our group have to say.

Club Races
The best thing to do on a golf course is - run.  That's why D Hettrick has organized what will be the 3rd Macoby Run Run 5M/5K at Macoby Run golf course.  The home made tortellini soup after the race is worth the price of registration.

Group On, Oldsters Shine, On Your Own or With Help?

Is It Tronno, Eh?
I don't know if it's the Lake Ontario water, but this year's Toronto Marathon was a scene of great old guy performances.  Ed Whitlock has been a record holding super senior runner for many years, holding almost every over-70 record and a fixture at the Berwick Run For The Diamonds.  Whitlock celebrated turning 80 by ripping off a world-record 3:15 time.  At the same race, the last finisher was Fauja Singh in 8:11, handily beating his 9 hour goal.  Not bad for a guy who is 100 years old, which lands him in the Guiness Book as the oldest person to complete a marathon.  Of course, Singh does have the advantage of having fresh legs as he did not start running marathons until he was in his 80s.

Self-Trained or Not?
Much has been made about Ryan Hall going without a coach.  He's decided that he can manage his own schedule by listening to his body rather than following a strict schedule.  Other athletes need the external discipline to stick to a plan.  Both the availability of personal coaches and of training plans through various websites and other resources have greatly increased the options available to individual runners, both elite and plodders.  How do you stack up?  Are you self-coached or do you rely on external resources for guidance.  How much help do you get as far as motivation or discipline?  Add some comments to share.

Club Races

Group Event, EWWW!, Save The Trails, Vitamins?

Finalized Group Run
Let's go for 10/29 at Pfaff Elementary (1600 Sleepy Hollow Road, Quakertown) followed by the Spinnerstown Hotel.  I'll have road maps and people can do all or part of the Rotary 10 mile or 4 mile course.  You're allowed to skip the worst hills without being labeled a weenie.  We'll meet at 10:00,noting that Spinnerstown doesn't open until 11:30.  RSVP to me at bill.tuszynski@gmail.com.

Bad Fashion Statement
Sometimes you'd like to run or cycle with your eyes closed.  A guy passed me at the Covered Bridge ride.  The seat of his cycling shorts were so thin you could see what he was wearing underneath.  Sadly for me, the answer was nothing.  He "winked" every time he turned over the crank.  Yuck!!!  Needless to say, I did not "tail" him for 20 miles.

Trail  Doctor Training
We have a bunch of trail dawgs, many of whom run at Lake Nockamixon.  Any trail runner knows that maintaining the trails is an important item.  The PA Equine Council is holding a free workshop on trail  stewardship on 1/29 from 8:30-4:30 at the Ottsville Fire Co. at 249 Durham Rd.  Runners, hikers and mountain bikers are invited to attend along with equine enthusiasts.  All attendees are asked to preregister by e-mailing mountainviewfarms@gmail.com.

Vitameanies
More evidence that overuse of vitamins has no effect.  Overdoing fat-soluble vitamins (A & E) leads to buid up in tissues while excess dosing of water soluble B vitamins and C just means you have high-priced urine.  http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/10/11/more-evidence-against-vitamin-use/?ref=health

Club Races
The darkness beckons for the Ghouls & Fools.  Find an oil lamp or tallow candle to go retro.  Just don't set the woods on fire except with your blazing speed.

Website
Visit the club website, www.buxmontrunning.com and check out the "Athlete Profile" page featuring short self-written bios of club members. That I'm on there proves you don't have to be a good athlete to be on the page! Send yours to either me or Tom Daugherty. Tom actually does the work in his function as webmeister.

Race Results
A weekend for spectacular performances, highlighted by Nancy Smith's sub-12 hour performance at Kona, Laurie Reinhart's 100 miler and the Lehigh Valley Running Scene 5th place finish as an ultra team at the 200 mile Ragnar Relay .  Besides captain Bob Bodkin and Michael Womelsdorf, other team members were Gary Long, Steve Budlong, Tim Nash, and Paul Peters
