New Member, Pools, Booze & Shoes

New Member
Welcome to Jean Artim.  From Jean, "I started running last year with the main objective to become healthier.  I have found it to be extremely rewarding both physically and emotionally.   I have participated in several 5ks and have slowly progressed to longer distance races Bow Tree 10k and Stoudts Brewery 12k this past weekend.  I am focusing on increasing my running distance."

Carpools?
Several races with carpool opportunities coming up.  First is the Evansburg trail 10 Miler on 10/31.  The race is at 10:00 so we'll  leave from the Quakertown Park & Ride at 8:30.  The Oley 10M/5K and Bear Creek Trail 10K/5K are both on 11/7.  The Oley carpool needs to leave from the same spot at 7:00.  Bear Creek at 8:30.  Later in November, we have Berwick on 11/25 and the Dirty Bird on 11/28.  Let me know if you're interested in any of these and I'll set things up.  Contact me at bill.tuszynski@gmail.com.  I'm running in all of the above except the 11/7 races.

Running and Alcohol
This from www.active.com.  They've obviously never spent time with the Pagoda Pacers.  http://www.active.com/running/Articles/Alcohol-and-Running-Do-They-Mix.htm?cmp=291&memberid=98004913&lyrisid=21088465

Chose Your Shoes
Despite the best efforts of Nike, et. al., more expensive isn't necessarily better when it comes to running shoes.  It makes cheapsters like me feel better.
Buying New Running Shoes (or Not)
By TARA PARKER-POPE
Joshua Bright for The New York Times Money often buys higher-quality goods, but not when it comes to running shoes, experts say.

Todays Patient Money column takes a look at the many upgrades shoe makers are adding to athletic shoes.
Shoe manufacturers keep adding bells and whistles to shoes in the form of cushioning gel pods, microprocessors and so-called thrust enhancers, but these upgrades dont seem to make runners safer. A review of current studies on running shoes published in 2009 found that there were no evidence-based studies that show running shoes actually help prevent injury. Indeed, injury rates have not gone down.
Fancy running shoes may even lead to injury, experts say. Some studies show that when runners don expensive running shoes that promise superior cushioning, they incur more injuries than runners using cheaper shoes.

Fund Raiser
From Jim Higgins:
A friend's daughter (Julie Cox) is running her first marathon in January for the Leukemia & Lyphoma Society. She chose the Mickey marathon at Disney (Excellent choice!). I told her that I would pass along her info to our Loonies running group. Listed here is her link: http://pages.teamintraining.org/nca/wdw11/jcoxuj
