New Member, Boston, New Race Series, Your first Marathon & Carpools

New Member
Mike Leary joined us a little while ago.  Here is his profile,  "I was a former cross-country runner in high school, and got back to running after a 15 year layoff.  For the past two years I've run about 20 to 30 miles per week and have competed in a few 10 milers and half-marathons (nothing longer yet).  I recently moved with my family (wife and two children) to Bucks County from Cary, NC and I'm looking for a running club in the area."

Boston Registration
If you were quick enough to BQ, you'll have to be equally quick to register for the Boston marathon.  Registration opens at 9AM on Monday 10/18.  You have to register online on the race website, www.baa.org. It sold out last year in about the time it takes for Usain Bolt to do 100 meters downhill with a strong tailwind so don't procrastinate.

Race Series
Heidi Pernia shares this info about a well-hidden and cheap but challenging and fun race series, "Wanted to let folks know I found a neat series of open cross country runs in Fairmont Park in Philly at Belmont Plateau. They have distances from 2K for ages 8 and under all the way up to 5k for high school and open women's and an open men's race of 5 miles. It is very no frill and a cost of $5.00. The course is a combination of loops on the grass and a gravel/dirt trail segment depending on the distance of the race. There are some challenging but not crazy hills and it is very spectator friendly. The schedule can be found at http://www.uagtca.org/Express/Welcome.htm Philadelphia Express is the running club that runs it and you can also google that. There are a lot of teams that run but you can also register as unattached. I think that there is only one more race left but they do have it every year. It is a great way to get young kids involved in cross country and the adults can participate too! Most of the kids races had 30-40 girls and boys.

This past Sat. Oct. 9th Nolan ran the Boys Bantam division (9 and 10 y.o.) and placed first on the boys 3k course in a time of 13:07. (7:02 min/mi).  I ran in the women's open 5k and placed first in 22:30. The next race is Oct. 23rd. If you would like a change from the roads but do not necessarily want to jump into one of Ron Horn's trail runs try this - it was a blast!!"

First Time
Share your first time marathon experiences, even if it was last week at Steamtown.

You can either post your experiences on this blog as comments or send them to me at bill.tuszynski@gmail.com.

Carpools?
Several races with carpool opportunities coming up - Evansburg trail 10 miler on 10/31, Oley 10M/5K and Bear creek Trail 10K/5K, both on 11/7.  Later in November, we have Berwick on 11/25 and the Dirty Bird on 11/28.  Let me know if you're interested in any of these and I'll set things up.  Contact me as above.

Clinical Research
Took this from Ron Horn's PCS e-blast for the two running in the US who don't receive them:

If you suffer mild to moderate knee pain and have had no knee surgery are between the ages 40 and 69 you may be eligible to participate in a research study of a dietary supplement.  QUALIFYING PARTICIPANTS WILL BE COMPENSATED FOR TIME & TRAVEL.  To learn more, please call: 610-779-7061  This study is being conducted in Pennsylvania, in both Reading and Lancaster: as well as in New York City.

The study is being run by Research Across America.  Research Across America is proud to work with many of the major global pharmaceutical in the following areas of research: Allergy/Asthma, Endocrinology, Obesity, Family & Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology, Gynecology, Infectious Disease, Neurology, Nutraceuticals, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, Pain Management, Rx-to-OTC Switch, Smoking Cessation, Urology, Vaccines and others.

MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of Research Across America is to provide thorough and compassionate health care to our patients while exceeding client expectations for patient enrollment and data integrity. We are committed to continuous quality improvement through positive and open communication, new technology, the education of our staff, the input of our patients and contributions to our community.  Other studies currently enrolling include diabetes, IBS, menstrual migraine, contact lens and contact lens solution.

For more background, visit their website at www.researchacrossamerica.com.  Nothing on the website combines relieving knee pain with enhancing any body parts, which would raise doubts about their legitimacy.
