New Member, Ave Maria, Go Coach, Cost Effective

New Members
We welcome Beth Howard and Nolan Pernia to our ranks.  Beth is a relatively new runner who joined at the Habitat 5K.  I've been reporting Nolan's times for a while as mom Heidi has been a long time member.  Heidi, who is no slouch herself and a frequent award winner at races, now struggles to stay within shouting distance of her son.

Profiling Mary
Here's a profile of three-time Ironwoman Mary Latza from this week's Morning Call.  Mary's a hard-core triathlete and has a bike that's worth more than my car.    http://www.mcall.com/health/mc-workoutwinner1206-20111206,0,6666171.story

Coaching Long Distances
Let's have a round of applause for Jack Heely and Dana Wentzel for leading Team Philly Challenge to a successful result at the Las Vegas marathon.  Neither ran but was instrumental in the team's performance.  I'd report on results but what happens in Vegas . . .

Racing on a Budget
Looking for some races to fill your winter but don't want to break the bank?  Then either head west for the Shiver by the River 5K/10K series in Reading or south to Tyler Pack for the Bucks County Road Runners' Winter Series.

The Shivers, put on by the Pagoda Pacers, are held monthly every second Sunday from December through March.  you can do all four races for $40 or each individually for $15.  No frill, no shirt but indoor facilities, good grub, a fine group of people and a banquet free for those who do a minimum of three races.

The BCRR series is weekly and more varied with distances ranging from 5K to a half marathon on some difficult and hilly courses in the park.  The facilities are more spartan (read outdoor) but the food is good, the fellowship great and there is a post-series banquet for BCRR members.  You can race a la carte for only $5 per race.

I've done the Shivers a number of times and run a bunch of the BCRR races (put the Terrible Tyler on your bucket list) and can say that every one of them has been memorable, especially those where we ran through snow or frozen half to death.  Both series are fully covered in our race calendar below.

Website
Visit the club website, www.buxmontrunning.com and check out the "Athlete Profile" page featuring short self-written bios of club members. That I'm on there proves you don't have to be a good athlete to be on the page! Send yours to either me or Tom Daugherty. Tom actually does the work in his function as webmeister.

Race Results
Looks like everyone stayed short this week.  Nice job by Chris Garges winning the Lights in the Parkway 5K.  Judging by the times, my guess is that the Souderton Reindeer 5K course was long.  Either that or everyone ran in a time warp where they slowed down to my pace.
