More Group Events?. Worldwide, Good Night Hurricane Irene, Dogging It, Evolved to Run

Trail Day
We had a great group of about a dozen runners and bikers, including several who ran to the trail, ran and rode home.  Some were so ambitious that they preferred to run extra rather than partake in food and beverage.  Misplaced priorities. . . Suggestions for where to go next and when?

Around the World
Almost 20% of the visitors to this site are from outside North America.  As you can see, we have an active running scene in our area (Eastern Pennsylvania outside of Philadelphia).  We're also very interested to hear about what things are like in your country.  How popular is running?  Are there many races?  Are most runners young or old or is there an even spread across the ages?  Are there many active clubs?  Share your experiences in the comments section and I'll weave them into a future newsletter.

Be A Mudder
Those racing on Sunday need to find their water shoes.  Besides running "wet and wild" at the zoo, Sunday's races feature the Hit the Hay trail race where the four water crossing will be more interesting, the Perk Up Half Marathon where staying hydrated will not be a problem - just open your mouth and look up, and the Shawnee Mud Run where making mud will get a lot easier.

Going to the Dogs
Many of us run with our dogs.  Post your notes in the comment section of the blog and I'll incorporate them in the next newsletter.  Here are the first comments:  Post yours in the comments section of this blog or send them to me at bill.tuszynski@gmail.com:

Mary Pacell: This is a great topic! I started running because of my dog, Glacier. He needed a ton of exercise when he was young (a weimaraner!!) and walking just didn't do it so I started adding in short run segments to our walksand found that I really enjoyed it. That was the start of my running life. Glacier's sweet spot was about 6-7 miles which we did several times a week. He occasionally would do 10-12 on the weekends with me. He was a big, strong, graceful runner and the best running partner for 10 years. We were even profiled in the Morning Call and he got his picture in the paper running in the Lehigh Parkway. He lived almost 13 years, probably because he was so active his whole life. I miss him every day.

Dawn Lowe: Great topic! Like Mary, I had a young, energetic dog whose exuberant energy was relieved by running. Mary and I ran a "pack"of dogs together for years! Tired dogs are GOOD dogs!!!! : ) It was sad when they all got too old to go with us. For awhile we got our doggy "fix" by running with the dogs of Last Chance Ranch. Sadly my four legged running buddy passed away two years ago. I am happy to report that I recently adopted a young, energetic dog from LCR whom I have just started to run with! Yesterday he ran 2.5 miles with me. He loves it. Runs along with tail high and mouth wide open in a smile! It is great fun to have a dog along again! I am just getting my mileage back up and he is a great motivator for getting me out the door!

Carolyn Brzezicki: I run with my 2 year-old lab/dachshund mix for my long runs and my tempo runs. The bunnies are a distraction to her, but otherwise she is great. We use a retractable leash so neither of us get jerked around if she needs to stop. It also allows me a more natural arm swing that the standard leash does not. The long runs are along a canal so she can get water breaks. If I have a run over 10 miles, I will figure a way to drop her off at home and I'll finish up alone.

Running is in Our Genes
Interesting observations about how humans evolved to be runners and the adaptions we have that were selected for to help us survive as hunter-gatherers.  Interesting comments about barefoot running as well.  http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/23/science/23conversation.html?ref=health
